Paralegal assists and supports attorneys with research and document preparation for court proceedings and legal transactions. Utilizes a variety of sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to research and analyze legal topics. Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience. Responsibilities:
- Assist attorneys in preparing legal documents such as pleadings, motions, and briefs
- Conduct legal research and gather relevant information for cases
- Proofread and transcribe legal documents and correspondence
- Maintain document management systems and organize case files
- Assist with administrative and clerical tasks such as scheduling appointments, managing calendars, and answering phone calls
- Prepare and file court documents, including e-filing when necessary
- Assist with trial preparation, including organizing exhibits and witness materials
- Perform data entry and maintain accurate records
Skills:
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize deadlines
- Excellent attention to detail for proofreading and transcribing legal documents
- Proficiency in using document management systems and other legal software
- Knowledge of contract law and legal terminology
- Strong administrative and clerical skills, including file management and phone etiquette
- Proficient in data entry with a high level of accuracy
