Two major functions of the Patient Account Representative (PAR) are patient billing and customer care inquiries. Depending on setting, the PAR may only perform billing and/or patient care inquiries, while in other settings, the PAR may perform both. In all settings, the PAR will perform additional duties, as assigned. PAR establishes and assigns financial responsibility and/or assists with arrangements while adhering to appropriate policies and procedures. In addition to collection of co-payments, pre-payments, and/or payments on account balances. May also work through the appropriate queues to address and resolve issues specific to insurance, including work queue errors, denied insurance claims, and maintenance of the patient system. In a patient care inquiry role, the Patient Account Representative determines, collect and process patient patients providing patient education on explanation of benefits, providing patient documentation while maintaining complete and accurate documentation .
Based on setting, organizing supporting provider documents; discussing pre-payment responsibilities; initiation and collaboration of patient financial assistance; charge entry/billing and charge verification, and evaluation of accounts as needed.
The Patient Account Representative must maintain good patient relation and excellent customer service. Must display professionalism and promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation. Must be able to work as part of a team and work independently. Must always maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Requires the ability to empathize with patients and their situations. Working knowledge of medical terminology and use of professional written communication when making notes. Ability to gather and use data effectively is desired and ability to handle multiple issues at a time.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Post-secondary education helpful. One year of work experience, preferably in a medical office setting. Medical terminology helpful; customer service skills essential. Six months' customer service experience desired.
