  •  The Physicist 5 plans and carries out a program of development comprising performance modeling, design and test of x-ray detectors and sources for CT systems. He assists in maintaining proper operation, test and calibration of equipment and provides guidance, education and direction to physicists and engineers.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Plan, direct and evaluate improvements to detection hardware including electronics and detectors.  Areas of attention include:
      • higher bias and reduced peaking time to double the count rate of existing crystals;
      • modified crystals with 1mm pixels for incremental counting improvements;
      • developing next-generation detectors using sub-pixel arrays and new ASIC and
      • continued monitoring of development of improved crystal materials.
    • Plan, direct and evaluate improvements to the source-tube assembly:
      • reduce weight and cost;
      • analyze proposed changes of vendors or components and
      • improve reliability.
    • Investigate other possible performance improvements to the x1000 platform:
      • multi-energy linearity;
      • classification directly from attenuation or from attenuation ratios;
      • BH from test chamber (many more materials) vs. from scanner;
      • implement 2nd BH table for ray-paths traversing ~ 1 belt thickness and
      • develop BH for 6-bin data to use with new ASIC
    • Work with engineers to improve the detector arms:
      • reduce weight and cost;
      • improve serviceability and reliability;
      • improve air flow and provide redundant blowers;
      • design and implement solution for moisture;
      • improve temperature control.
    • Monitors the maintenance and calibration program for equipment in radiotherapy department and the satellite facility.
    • Provides technical guidance to senior management.
    • Performs related duties as required. 

    Job Qualifications

    • PhD. required

    3-5 years of relevant experience, required.
