Plumber inspects, repairs, installs, modifies, and maintains plumbing fixtures and piping in heating, water and drainage systems. Identifies plumbing and safety problems applicable to the installation and takes necessary corrective action using appropriate parts and tools. Being a Plumber complies with all required safety, building code and inspection requirements. Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, and other instructions. Additionally, Plumber has completed required apprenticeship. Typically requires a high school diploma. Requires Journeyman Plumber status. Requires a State License for plumbing. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Plumber works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.   • Employees in this job participate in and oversee plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance projects on state properties such as office buildings, prisons, and hospitals.  This is the advanced level. The employee functions as a crew leader, overseeing the work of lower-level Plumbers, prisoners, and others, and performs journey-level plumbing assignments. This position has 50% or more prisoner contact and/or supervision and is in the secured area of the prison.


    Position Description
     

    Education 
    Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

    Experience Five years of experience in the plumbing trade, including one year equivalent to a Plumber E9 in State service.

     

    Completion of a vocational training program in plumbing that includes commercial or industrial level instruction may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades people.
    The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation. 

    Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

    Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of a journey plumber’s license issued by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth.

    New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years  will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.  All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
