Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.     This position is open for INTERNAL candidates only. Applicants must be a current City of Louisville Police Officer/Corporal in good standing to be considered.

    The Police Sergeant is under the general direction of the Operations Division Chief, this role will serve as the Watch Commander and is responsible for the supervision of commissioned and non-sworn personnel and for operational functions during an assigned shift. Serves as the highest ranking Police Supervisor when Command Staff and Chief of Police are unavailable. Performs a variety of law enforcement and supervisory tasks required to ensure effective and efficient operations. Serves as a "working Sergeant" and is actively involved in daily policing activities, and leading/mentoring Department members. The Police Sergeant serves as a member of the Department Management Team and performs other supervisory and administrative duties, and other work as directed.

    *The Testing Process is tentatively planned for June 10, 11 & 12 and will include:

    HIRING RANGE: Step 1 – $53.42 hourly / $111,113.60 annually

    Step 2 – $56.09 hourly/ $116,667.20 annually
    Step 3 – $58.90 hourly/ $122,512.00 annually
    Step 4 – $61.84 hourly/ $128,627.20 annually

    Examples of Duties

    • Sees that department vision, mission, values and objectives are carried out.
    • Oversees the assignment of police officers, Corporals, Police Support Technicians code enforcement officers;; evaluates performance; sets goals for Department member development; assists with problems; develops solutions; provides technical direction; personnel problems; provides training as needed reviews reports; and performs other administrative activities as directed.
    • Actively involved in on-scene supervision, management and leadership of Department members engaged in police activities, investigations and services. Responds to significant calls for service and major emergency call, particularly those where violence is anticipated; assumes command as required and provides direction to officers and others; ensures all cases are properly supervised. Prepares and oversees preparation of case information, reports, and warrants, and reviews all reports written by assigned personnel.
    • Reviews officer reports, prepares reports of shift activities, and prepares performance evaluations of subordinates. Educates subordinates on policy and administrative decisions.
    • Reviews officer training requests, identifies and recommends trainings.
    • Reviews officer entries in Brazos, Data Collection Sheets, AvailWeb, The Beast, and evidence dispositions.
    • Inspects vehicles and equipment on a periodic basis and ensures that all are well maintained.
    • Performs a variety of police activities such as testifying in court, helping prepare cases, evaluating new equipment, public education, and special program development.
    • Evaluates and allocates personnel and equipment resources as needed. Keeps the Operations Division Commander and Command Staff apprised of general and specific problems; such as equipment status, community or specific area problems, personnel problems, etc.
    • Identifies Departmental challenges and provides suggested solutions and feedback to Command Staff.
    • Makes forcible and non-forcible arrests.
    • Operates specialized and non-specialized police equipment to include police cars, firearms, handcuffs, leg restraints, bullet proof clothing and equipment, radios and other related equipment.
    • Understands the concepts of contemporary police methods, techniques and procedures, administrative operations and organization.
    • Analyzes problems, makes decisions consistent with Department policies, and assesses effectiveness of decisions.
    • Supervises other employees.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
    • Manages situational demands for neighboring agency assistance.
    • Must have effective verbal and written communications skills.
    • Ability to interpret, implement, educate on, and enforce Department Policy/Procedure, Directives, Department Regulations, Municipal Ordinances, State and Federal law.
    • Ability to perform all the essential duties of both a police officer and corporal.

    General Qualifications

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement training academy.
    • Active Colorado P.0.S.T. Certification
    • Minimum of 3 years of POST Certified Law Enforcement Officer experience, in the patrol and/or investigative function, in a municipal, county or state law enforcement agency.
    • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Business Administration, Management or Public Administration, or other directly related field, from an accredited college or university.
    • Internal Candidates: If you were hired (or in process of being hired) before September 1, 2021 you are grandfathered into the City of Louisville Police Department Promotional standards and therefore educational requirements are waived. However, you are encouraged to continue with your education as this is likely to enhance your opportunities for promotion.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    The working environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and with explosives; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.

    Work involves a significant amount of time spent in a patrol vehicle, and a high degree of exposure to hazards and danger (from traffic hazards to the danger inherent in working with career criminals and emotionally unstable persons). Working conditions can be highly stressful. This position also involves shift work, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
