Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Summary:
Enforces laws and city codes related to the protection of life and property, responds to calls for service and patrols the community, directs and controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbance of peace, and arrests violators by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs protective service work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances with required related work; Patrols assigned areas of the city and responds to calls for service; Enforces all federal and state laws, and city ordinances and codes relating to public safety and welfare; Monitors property for security, maintains order and public safety, serves warrants, apprehends and arrests criminal suspects and law violators; Prepares cases for court and provides court testimony as necessary; Enforces traffic laws by stopping violators and issuing warnings or citations, as appropriate; and Investigates traffic accidents and criminal complaints.
Minimum Requirements:
At a minimum, possess a high school diploma or GED.
Possess a valid SC driver's license with no convictions for driving under the influence or driving under suspension, or capable of obtaining one before hire.
Must be 21 years of age and a US citizen by birth or naturalization.
Will be required to pass a complete and thorough background investigation, pre-employment physical, polygraph, physical ability test, written examination, and psychological assessment.
Must be able to attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, SC to obtain Class 1 certification, or currently possess a valid LE Class 1 Certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy or a valid out-of-state POST Certification.
