Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Basic Function — Under direction, receives regular and 911 telephone calls and dispatches appropriate personnel to handle emergencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities — Processes reports for prosecutors; maintains case, report, accident, complaint, insurance, and related files; tests sirens, radios, and phones; checks validity of driver’s licenses and vehicle tags; submits crime information to law enforcement databases; and performs additional duties as assigned
Qualifications — Ability to speak clearly and concisely; ability to multitask and act quickly in emergencies; knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to type 35 w.p.m.; ability to listen to, follow, and communicate oral and written instructions; and ability to learn police procedures and practices.
Education and Experience — Completion of high school or GED required; and two years’ experience performing clerical tasks and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications preferred
Special Requirements — Must remain certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Fire Dispatcher, and Emergency Police Dispatcher; must complete and stay current with National Crime Information Center training; must be available to work nights, in shifts, overtime, and week-ends;
Physical Requirements — Little physical effort is required. Individual must be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions — Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements.
Salary Range — The starting salary for this position is $15.80 per hour plus benefits.
