General Summary:
As an Outside Plant - Drill Operator at Hyak, you will play a critical role in the Outside Plant (OSP) department by facilitating the construction of a Fiber-to-the-Home network build. The role of a Drill Operator includes operating horizontal/directional drill rigs, locating equipment and product support equipment. Perform semi-skilled activities related to HDD locating must be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures.
Essential Job Functions:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operates drill for installation of underground conduit and fiber optic cable.
- Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
- Assist in potholing and remediation
- Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie-ins
- Ability to read and comprehend utility locates.
- Perform heavy manual labor, able to lift 70 lbs on occasion
- Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.
- Ability to properly formulate and mix drilling mud for the site conditions.
- Ability to perform proper reaming and pull back methods for existing conditions.
- Ability to properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required reports, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.
- Setup and cleanup of work site including traffic and pedestrian control
- Follows specifications for the job and company policies.
- Complies with safety procedures on and off the project site.
- Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
- Knowledge of locating fiber optic cable, identifying rights-of-way, and reading as-built documentation
- Hand and finger dexterity to carry and to use tools and equipment as necessary
- Ability to work while standing 80 - 90% of the time
- Vision: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors
- Flagging card preferable. But will train within 90 days of hire
- Must be able to work overtime as required and have reliable transportation with a valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen upon hire.
Preferred Skills:
- 2-5 years’ Directional drilling experience
- Class A CDL
- Ability to operate heavy machinery

Outside Plant - Drill Operator work involves driving a motor vehicle approximately 10% of the time and must be able to regularly and safely perform all functions of operating a motor vehicle. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary to frequently stand, walk, climb, or sit for prolonged periods of time and regularly position oneself (e.g. bend, twist, reach, grasp, push, pull) and/or handle, lift, and carry objects over 50 lbs. frequently. Close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
