Principal Architect oversees and manages a team responsible for architectural projects. Reviews and approves architectural procedures and techniques used to complete projects. Being an Principal Architect has a diverse knowledge of architecture principles and practices, uses advanced techniques, and has responsibility for final specifications, approval of ordered materials, and overall guidance on objectives and concepts. Ensures architectural designs are completed on time and adhere to the established specifications and standards. Additionally, Principal Architect keeps up to date on the development of new architectural methods or techniques. Requires a bachelor's degree in architecture. Requires a State Architect's License. Typically reports to a director. The Principal Architect typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be an Principal Architect typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. The Principal will: provide leadership for Andrews Academy; ensure the continuation of Andrews Academy as an excellent Seventh-day Adventist secondary school; and administer the school, consistent with the policies and procedures adopted by the Operating Board.

    Duties and responsibilities

    Essential Responsibilities:

    • Provide a personal example of a rich and mature spiritual life

    • Oversee the development of strong spiritual programming (e.g., vespers)

    • Support and develop Andrews Academy's unique academic curriculum and diverse co-curricular programs

    • Seek innovative and creative ways to improve all aspects of the Andrews Academy experience

    • Coordinate an effective system of regular communication with and among parents, students, faculty, the Governing Board, university administration and interested consituents

    • Work with the finance committee to prepare and implement the annual budget for Andrews Academy

    • Ensure that the academy maintains appropriate accreditation from academic and church bodies

    • Set a tone of high quality and accountability at all levels of academy life

    • Serve as secretary of the Governing Board

    • Convene and preside at regularly-called academy fauclty meetings and oversee standing committees

    • Develop a supportive, empathetic and understanding relationship with each member of the academy faculty

    • Develop appropriate and caring relationships with students

    • Recruit students

    • Serve as the chief development officer of the academy

    • Additional Responsibilities as Assigned by the Andrews University Provost or the Andrews Academy Governing Board


    Supervisory responsibilities

    Responsible for all faculty and staff of Andrews Academy. Ensuring appropriate supervision of all Andrews Academy students.

    • Ability to articulate and inculate the mission of Adventist Christian education

    • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse university environment

    • Minimum of a masters degree

    • Denomination and state secondary education credentials or eligibility to qualify

    • Knowledge of current 9 - 12 education environment


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience as a secondary school principal

    • Experience as a secondary school teacher

    • Doctoral degree
