Product Development Director plans and directs the resources and processes required to implement the vision and strategy for new product development and product lifecycle management of existing products. Establishes research and concept development projects and capabilities to innovate new products, product enhancements, and product redesign. Being a Product Development Director conducts market analysis and interacts with customers and prospects to identify new markets, articulate the value proposition, define requirements, and lead the development of a product roadmap. Oversees new product development and collaboration with internal stakeholders, including marketing, sales, and manufacturing, to ensure that new and existing products support the organization's financial goals. Additionally, Product Development Director develops teams with the knowledge and expertise to fulfill product development objectives. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Product Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Product Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.   • Responsible for leading the development and execution of a New Product Development strategy that meets or exceeds revenue and profit targets by identifying, developing, and launching new products into the company’s vertical markets and expanding the company’s global market product portfolio. The NPD Manager works closely with Product Management teams to develop, maintain and prioritize product roadmaps and execute development projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    STRATEGIC PLANNING
    • Collaborate with the Product Management and Sales executives to establish the company's long-term product development vision and strategy. Translate strategic objectives into a product roadmap and actionable plans for the NPD team.
    • In collaboration with Product Management teams, evaluate and prioritize new product development projects based on market opportunities, resource availability, and alignment with company goals. Make data-driven decisions to optimize project portfolio management.
    • Define and optimize the product development process to ensure efficiency, quality, and timely delivery of projects.
    • Create, release, and execute growth plans for existing brands and product lines as required.
    • Identify potential risks and challenges throughout the product development lifecycle. Implement strategies to mitigate risks and maintain project timelines.
    • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of the NPD team and projects.
    • Regularly analyze performance data and initiate corrective actions when necessary.
    PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
    • Lead introduction of new or complementary product lines that improve competitive positioning.
    • Establish product development timelines and lead team to execute action plans for the release of new products.
    • Assist Sales and Marketing in various activities required to support new product launches.
    • Clearly communicate new projects in terms of total investment, profitability, and potential risk.
    • Work with Supply Chain and suppliers to drive timely release of new products. Address need for new suppliers, qualify and onboard as appropriate.
    • Assist in NPD process development and optimization as required.
    • Monitor industry trends and products through event attendance, online forums, product groups, etc.
    • Stay informed about industry trends, market demands, and competitive landscape. Conduct market research and customer insights to identify new product opportunities and enhance existing offerings.
    • Ensure that all new products meet relevant regulatory and safety standards, adhering to industry guidelines and legal requirements.
    • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between NPD, Product Management, Marketing, Sales, and other relevant departments to ensure smooth project execution and alignment with overall business strategies.
    BUDGET AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
    • Develop and manage the New Product Development (NPD) budget, allocating resources efficiently to support project requirements while maintaining financial objectives.
    • Quantify and manage WPS NPD resources against project queue to maximize NPD financial return.
    • Manage current WPS NPD equipment with a resource plan focused on reducing development lead times.
    • Manage NPD facility and set rules guidelines and safety protocols.
    • Properly balance staff time with NPD projects
    LEADERSHIP
    • Provide strong and inspirational leadership to the NPD team, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and excellence.
    • Mentor and guide team members to maximize their potential and professional growth.
    EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Business Management required. MBA beneficial but not required.
    • A minimum of 7 years domestic and international Product Development and minimum of 3 years leadership experience required.
    • Advanced understanding of power sports aftermarket industry strongly desired.
    • Experience working in distribution and dealer networks and working knowledge of how they operate.
    • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite applications
    • Familiarity with PLM, PIM, and ERP system business applications.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of WPS brands and product lines.
    • Working knowledge of quality management systems and procedures.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Strong attention to detail.

    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
