  • Languages, Literatures, and Cultures - Visiting Assistant Professor in German Studies – 000080G

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time, visiting assistant professor position in German Studies beginning in August 2023. This is a non-tenure track appointment, annually renewable for up to two years, contingent upon performance, budget, and continued need. Applicants should have a specialization in German-language literature and culture and a commitment to teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. The University of Richmond’s German Studies program is small but vigorous, with both major and minor tracks, and courses contributing to Film Studies, Global Studies, Jewish Studies, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Theatre. Teaching load is equivalent to six units per year, including five classroom courses and supervision of student teaching assistants for German language as well as additional duties in support of the academic program. We seek candidates capable of teaching a range of German language/culture courses in addition to survey courses on German literature and film taught in both English and German. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in German Studies, have native or near-native fluency in German and English, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and scholarly promise. Experience with instructional technologies, dedication to teaching language in cultural context, and a commitment to pedagogy that values inclusivity and diversity are required.

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With approximately 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students “to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.”

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the German Studies program and the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures department, please see https://llc.richmond.edu/majors-minors/german/index.html

Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu and submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and teaching portfolio (including a statement of teaching philosophy, a syllabus for an independently developed topics course, and a teaching video, if available). The teaching statement should articulate the candidate’s teaching philosophy, interests, and future professional development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence on March 23, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Interviews will be conducted virtually in April 2023. Please direct all inquiries about this position to Dr. Kathrin Bower, Coordinator of German Studies (kbower@richmond.edu).
