This position provides visionary academic leadership and direction for one of the academic divisions at MSC Southeast. As an administrator, this person supports and advances a campus culture of equity and belonging within the division, as well as throughout the college community. The dean is responsible for innovative program development and revision for Liberal Arts and Sciences departments in consultation with the Vice President of Student Success (VPSS), faculty, and other division deans to meet the needs of students. In addition, the dean leads the college’s continuous improvement efforts to promote and support quality online instruction. The dean also interacts with regional colleges and universities that support transfer pathways and student learning. As such, the dean is an essential part of the Student Success team and a member of the Strategic Planning and Administrative committees. The incumbent stays current in their field and in classroom pedagogy in order to support state of the art instruction at the college.
Provide strategic instructional leadership for the academic division with a focus on faculty development, continuous improvement, and a vital academic program mix.
- Promote and support the college vision for effective teaching and learning in the areas of assessment of student learning, faculty development, curriculum development, instructional technology, instructional design, and online learning.
- Maintain strong pedagogical skills, including knowledge of adult learning theory.
- Support and expand transfer pathways across the division to promote student success.
- Promote a positive environment for teaching and learning in all modes of instruction.
- Champion a continuous quality improvement process, including the development, implementation, and review of instructional programs and courses (i.e. Program Review).
- Monitor enrollments in within the division to promote fiscal integrity.
- Determine and schedule instructional course offerings that strategically meet the needs of students.
- Partner on articulation of educational programs agreements, including High Schools in the region, PSEO and concurrent enrollment and ensure requirements met with High School faculty.
- Oversee the implementation of assessment policies and procedures within the division
- Supervise and coordinate accreditation and certification activities within the division.
- Coordinate with faculty the planning of and participation in regularly scheduled program Advisory Committee meetings in the identification and selection of new programs to meet market needs.
- Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing MinnState and MSC Southeast academic affairs policies.
- Ensure the college’s commitment to diversity is reflected in the content and design of instructional programs and courses.
- Participate in state, regional and national professional groups as appropriate.
- Participate on Statewide Minnesota State system committees as appropriate.
Supervise and evaluate instructional personnel in assigned areas.
- In cooperation with Human Resources, recruit qualified full and part-time instructional personnel.
- Supervise full and part-time instructional faculty including assigning credit base instructional and non-credit instruction through Faculty Workload Management (FWM) system.
- Evaluate full and part-time instructional faculty.
- As Supervisor of record, maintain appropriate records on instructors including professional development plans and assessments.
Manage budgets and fiscal health in assigned areas.
- Recommend budgetary requirements for personnel and non-personnel areas.
- Monitor budgetary expenditures and modify budgets so that resources are handled appropriately.
- Administer budgets to assure that needs are met and fiscal integrity is maintained.
- Collaborate with VP of Finance and Administration on Cost Studies of programs and communication with faculty.
Provide necessary services to students in areas of assigned responsibility.
- Respond to students to address problems and concerns as they occur.
- Advise and council students as appropriate and, when appropriate, partner with appropriate student services.
- Coordinate recruitment and retention efforts for academic programs.
- Promote and encourage student organizations and clubs.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with faculty, students, community agencies, advisory committees, business and industry and other groups.
- Be accessible and responsive to faculty, students, staff and community.
- Maintain communications with system office staff and other system administrators, as well as peer administrators across the system in similar areas of responsibility.
- Promote cooperation with regional high schools, businesses, upper division colleges and interagency groups.
- Assist with development and execution of articulation agreements.
- Assist in public relations, publicity and other communication systems.
