Professor - Sociology teaches courses in the discipline area of sociology. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Sociology provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Sociology typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Position Summary

    MCC instructors are higher-education professionals who champion student learning. They engage and inspire students, applying innovative teaching and learning pedagogies in instruction. They assess student learning to ensure students success, staying abreast of trends in the discipline. Our instructors collaborate within the College as discipline experts, helping the College reach its strategic goals through active participation in college committees and by promoting the College to future students throughout our community.

    Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

    Including but are not limited to:

    • Teach the assigned class in accordance with the learning objectives and Concourse syllabus using instructional strategies to engage students
    • Develop and manage working syllabus, course materials, and assignments
    • Provide feedback and evaluate students' performance throughout the learning process which could involve being available for student conferences either before or after class, and by College email if necessary
    • Maintain and submit class syllabus, grades and attendance records, and required course related data
    • Use educational technology (i.e. course management platform such as Canvas)
    • Assess student learning and submit required reports of assessment results
    • Maintain currency in professional field
    • Work cooperatively within the department, the division, and throughout the College in striving for educational excellence
    Required Qualifications

    • Course specific minimum qualifications are approved annually by the Board of Trustees and are available in all Academic Division Offices.
    • Commitment to the mission of the community college, and to teaching and motivating community college students in ways appropriate to their diverse backgrounds
    • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
