Position Description

The Controls Manager is responsible for providing leadership for the Automation Team, driving continuous improvement projects, leading infrastructure automation upgrades to keep automation systems up-to-date and mitigate obsolescence. In addition, the AT/IT manager will be an expert in PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, and Servo System programming and troubleshooting, as well as a master in Ethernet Network configuration and diagnostics and developing the SQL Server. This position will also work to enhance the skills of Controls Technicians, Electricians, and Instrumentation Technicians through developing training development plans and organizing and delivering relevant training sessions.

Essential Functions

• Continuously improving manufacturing processes in terms of quality and performance measurements and identifying and eliminating bottleneck areas.
• Design, document, troubleshoot and lead the launch of new products and processes from an automation perspective
• Identify and solve safety concerns encountered during design and study of manufacturing processes.
• Work with production to make modifications to equipment and work areas for maximum efficiency of operation
• Maintain a knowledge base in the capacity of existing utilities and the current level of utilization.
• Stay abreast of the latest safety, environmental and other regulations which affect the facility to ensure compliance.
• Develop and support the capital project planning and manage installation projects.
• Oversee the automation of the equipment and the facility to ensure the company receives maximum utilization of its assets.
• Reviews, evaluates, counsels, disciplines and discharges employees as necessary to ensure department meets or exceeds productivity requirements.
• Evaluates and recommends improvements to product manufacturability.
• Responsible to adhere to food quality and food safety as per quality standards and/or Safe Quality Food requirements.
• Ensure compliance to all OHSA and environmental regulatory and corporate standards. Investigate and identify root causes of any non-compliance.
• Oversee effective deployment of human resources throughout the plant and ensure the correct administration of the collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

• Diploma/Degree in Electronics, Automation, or Electrical Engineering plus 5 years of related automation/controls experience (or a combination of education/experience) required.
• Strong leadership capabilities in a fast-paced production environment required.
• Rockwell Automation PLC, VFD, HMI, and Servo System programming and troubleshooting expert
• PLC programming utilizing RSLogix 5, 500, 5000, and FactoryTalk Studio software
• DeviceNet and Ethernet I/P knowledge will be key for success.
• Remote communication and I/O systems experience
• Experience in Virtual Network and Thin Clients
• SQL Server Experience (preferred)
• Licensed Industrial Electrician (preferred)
• Previous experience in the food/beverage manufacturing industry preferred.

Position-Specific Skills:

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Windows, Excel, & Outlook) with the ability to learn new applications as required. SAP experience is highly preferred.
• An understanding of Safe Quality Food (SQF), responsibility for Food Safety /Food Quality and the responsibility to take action when notified or becomes aware of any Food Safety or Food Quality issue.
• Must be flexible to work alternate shifts if production needs allow. Ability to establish, meet deadlines and prioritize work
• Demonstrated problem solving skills
• Ability to initiate, compile, analyze and provide accurate reporting
• Must be confident, approachable, and energetic with an eye for detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Work with confidential information

Working Environment:

• Physical Demands– Continuously standing or walking. Regular requirements to lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight.
• Visual/Sensory – This position requires attention to detail, requiring attention with one or two senses at a time.
• Work environment – Work and environment fasted paced, requiring ability to remain focused under pressure.
• Schedule – This role will be primarily be Monday – Friday but must be flexible to work nights and/or weekends as needed to support the business.
