Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice. The candidate should also be able to conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and forensic evaluations for competency restoration.

    Responsibilities:

    • Make specific recommendations for further evaluation, medication, psychological services, environmental

    change, and/or hospitalization.

    • Make provisional recommendations for treatment, specifying conditions; and for medications, specifying

    type(s) of medication(s) and dosage(s).

    • Be willing to provide cross coverage to other units, if needed.
    • Be responsible for involuntary commitment hearings and court-related activities as necessary, in consultation

    with the facility.

    • Confer with the facility psychological, medical, counseling, and security staff during a time not used in

    evaluation and treatment of individuals

    • Have the ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary treatment team.
