  • Job Summary:

    The Ranch Foreman is responsible for complete maintenance of Nugen's Ranch fields, livestock, vehicles (tractors, side-by-sides), and greenhouses. This position oversees the production of vegetables, flowers, and hay. The Ranch Foreman functions as repair person of ranch equipment, works with counselors to coordinate weekly work groups with treatment clients, as well as leads and trains clients and Ranch staff. This position also assists in some client transportation and frequent donation pickups using AARS vehicles.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide general maintenance of ranch vehicles and implements (tractors, etc.) and keep in proper running order.
    • Oversee the maintenance and operation of the AARS Greenhouse and animal care which includes breeding records, pen maintenance, feeding, butchering inventory, and arranging for animal transportation to slaughterhouse, etc.
    • Oversee the planting, upkeep, harvesting and storage of all crops grown.
    • Assist in shopping for facility, including ordering of meats, supplies, and other material needed.
    • Deal with other agencies such as produce wholesales, surplus property, building supply companies, etc.
    • Be responsible for overall upkeep of AARS fields.
    • Conduct inventories of Ranch equipment and supplies under his/her supervision/oversee the tool room.
    • Supervise/oversee work assignments of drivers, and ranch hands.
    • Conduct performance evaluations on all supervised employees.
    • Submit a fortnightly written report of the AARS ranch operation to the Director of Operations.
    • Initiate Purchase Orders for farm equipment, ranch, and fields.
    • Oversee work assignments of clients and cooperate with the Director of Clinical Operation, Clinical Manager, and / or Clinical Supervisor in providing therapeutic experiences for clients.
    • Complete documentation on the client's progress and submits it to the client's counselor weekly.
    • Assist in transportation duties and donation runs.
    • Learn and maintain client confidentiality within federal and state laws.
    • Help participants understand and employ recovery strategies.
    • Maintain project logs, reports and records in appropriate files and database(s).
    • Prepare and submit timely reports and records to Executive Director.
    • Read all policies and procedures manuals of AARS; able to pass exam manuals.
    • Participate in staff meetings or review minutes within 72 hours of missed meeting.
    • Conduct staff training on topics related to the operation of the ranch, farm animals, greenhouse, etc.
    • Prepare and submit incidents reports as needed both positive and negative to Director of Operations and other staff.
    • Participate in probationary and annual evaluation meetings and will assist in the annual review of the AARS Operations Manual.
    • Be responsible to be on-call for all emergencies that arise at AARS, which may include, but not be limited to: Power outages, earthquakes, and water/sewage issues.

    Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

    • Knowledge of general maintenance in order to know when to call for expert help.
    • Knowledge of farming (farm equipment) and animal care (husbandry).
    • Knowledge of Substance Use Disorder as a disease.
    • Knowledge of vehicles repair and maintenance.
    • Ability to work without close supervision and to supervise others as needed.
    • Ability to communicate with treatment clients verbally and non-verbally.
    • Ability to write legibly.
    • Demonstrate the ability to respond to crises situations and emergencies with good judgment.
    • Must be in good physical condition in order to carry and lift heavy objects (at least 50 Ibs.) and to do a variety of maintenance chores.
    • Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate or higher education.
    • Must have: Current TB test (obtainable within the first 30 days of employment); Current First Aid/CPR Cards (obtainable within the first 90 days of employment); and show proof of COVID-19 vaccination (before hire).
    • Must have a valid Alaska Driver's License and CDL, with a good driving record, and is insurable.
    • Must be able to pass mandated criminal background check with an allowance for a variance.
    • Must be a person who is free from allergies, which would interfere with daily Ranch life.
    • May be a resident of the Mat-Su Borough and a person with knowledge of Alaska Native Cultures, both of which are preferred.

    Core Competencies:

    • Knowledge of farm, greenhouse operations and animal husbandry.
    • Knowledge of Ground Maintenance.
    • Knowledge of Vehicle Maintenance.
    • Ability to work with handicap individuals.
    • Ability to commutate and lead.
    • Exercise good judgment.
    • Knowledge of DEC, Fire Codes, Water Rights, State and Federal Regulations.
