Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist will provide therapeutic recreation services to adult patients including evaluation, treatment planning, and implementation of an individualized treatment program and related documentation and communication.

    Responsibilities

    • Engages in population appropriate communication.
    • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
    • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
    • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
    • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
    • Complete a functional assessment of the patient using appropriate therapeutic assessment tool.
    • Develop individualized treatment programs consistent with patient's diagnosis, status, and goals.
    • Establish a plan of care that includes realistic and measurable goals in relation to the patient's goals, diagnosis, prognosis, learning ability of patient and caregiver, physical/mental status, and anticipated lifestyle.
    • Make recommendations for discharge, including appropriate referrals.
    • Develop and implement an individualized treatment program in collaboration with the treatment team that is consistent with patient diagnosis, status, and goals.
    • Develop and implement patient activities in collaboration with other team members as appropriate.
    • Identify patients appropriate for activities based on functional status.
    • Lead/co-lead therapeutic groups and individual activities for patients.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation (preferred) or related field or 90-hr. course for activity professionals and continuing education.
    • Must have the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
    • Must be able to deal tactfully with team members, other staff, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
    • Must be able to plan, organize, and conduct a variety of activities.
    • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing activity practices.
