The Department of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies (PTRS) comprises two programs: Philosophy (PHIL) and Theology and Religious Studies (RELS).
Philosophy: The Philosophy program at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is designed to be a solid foundation for further graduate and professional study as well as a springboard for creation and contribution in a variety of career fields and private pursuits.
Minor in PHIL: consists of 18 credits or six courses. Both PHIL 110 (Thinking Nimbly: Logic and Creative Problem-Solving) and PHIL 120 (Discovering Philosophy) can count toward the minor. The remainder of the credits can be selected from any USJ Philosophy course or a student may complete select courses from RELS and other disciplines.
Theology and Religious Studies (RELS): The Theology and Religious Studies curriculum encourage students to reflect critically upon the meaning of life, religious faith, Christian living, and interfaith cooperation. While the majority of the courses are approached from the perspective of the Roman Catholic tradition, courses bearing upon other religious traditions are also offered.
Major in RELS: Religious Studies majors will explore the ultimate questions of our existence (e.g., meaning of life, our obligations to God and to each other) through the study of theology, comparative religions, spirituality, morality, and social justice. Majors can choose a concentration in Theology, Religion, Religious Education, Justice and Peace.
Minor in RELS: consists of two required courses - RELS 254 (Intro to the Bible) and RELS 266 (World Christianity) - and four elective courses. Students can minor with a concentration in Religious Studies or Ethics.
Ethics Minor: is an interdisciplinary minor offered by both Philosophy and Religious Studies programs.
Certificate in Interfaith Leadership: USJ students can earn their Interfaith Leadership Studies Certificate which explores religious traditions of social justice, service to others, and global responsibility.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Non-Terminal degree holders with 0-6 credits of teaching experience: $2,900 per course
Terminal Degree holders with 0-6 credits of teaching experience: $3,100 per course
Non-Terminal Degree holders with 7 credits of teaching experience: $3,300 per course
Terminal Degree holders with 7 credits of teaching experience: $3,600 per course
