    The Department of Religious Studies offers a MA degree in Religious Studies, an undergraduate major and a minor. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers in order to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.

    Description of Work

    Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    The selected candidate will lead a growing multidisciplinary department with a vibrant graduate program and a diverse set of research interests and needs. They should have the ability to work with interdisciplinary programs and centers, be a strong advocate for the department at the College and University levels, and be able to perpetuate the University's outreach mission.
    Minimum Experience/Education

    UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

    Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
    The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications from qualified University of North Carolina Charlotte faculty for Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. The position requires that the candidate have an earned Ph.D. in Religious Studies or relevant field from an accredited institution and an exemplary record of publication, teaching and service that will support appointment at the rank of full or associate professor (with eligibility for promotion to full). Additional required qualifications include the ability to develop a clear vision for sustained growth in scholarly and academic programs that enhance departmental visibility nationally and internationally; the ability to work closely with the faculty to promote the highest level of excellence in teaching, research and service; the ability to facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support; strong communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to supervise the allocation of physical, budgetary, and support staff resources; the ability to recruit students for undergraduate and graduate programs and department course offerings and to promote effective department and faculty-based strategies for recruitment; and a commitment to promote diversity as a value in the department and college. Previous administrative experience is highly desirable.
