The Director of Development is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and overseeing the fund development and assists event coordinator with fundraising activities of the Shelter. This position will report to the Executive Director and works in conjunction with the Executive Director to carry out the organization’s mission and goals.

Tasks & Major Responsibilities
Development/Fundraising:
- Develops, evaluates, and revises annual fund-raising strategies. Responsible for program planning and evaluation, encompassing all fund-raising programs that the organization sponsors, and reviews and revises them for efficiency and profitability
- Cultivates and solicits charitable contributions through activities to include prospecting, researching, communication with management and Board of Directors to identify prospects to include but not limited to renewal donors, corporations, foundations and individuals
- Plans and implements ongoing program to cultivate planned gifts including recognition programs for donors who have remembered the society in wills and bequest Develops ongoing relationships in local community with individuals in positions to assists gift givers, such as trust officers, estate planners that ensures annual bequests
- Researches and writes foundation/grant funding proposals and applications
- Work closely with Executive Director to understand program funding needs and create opportunities to attract major donor, corporate and foundation support.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising infrastructure; define strategies and clearly articulate goals and objectives including individual, major, and corporate gifts, planned giving, etc.
- Establish and maintain a strong working partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to strategically advance the mission and goals of the organization.
- Work with the Executive Director , members of the management team and Board of Directors in preparing an annual budget as it pertains to Development.
- Developing publications and communications that support annual giving and that are aligned with overall Shelter goals and objectives.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of the shelters programs and activities so as to maximize donor participation in and support of the organization.
- Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and/or prospective major donors to obtain their new, renewed, sustained or increased support; thank them for their past support, and report to them on how their gifts have been used.
- Data Base Management:
- Responsible for overall management of the donor/fundraising database to include upgrades and utilization of software.
- Assist Business Manager with the data selects for direct mail, newsletter, event invitations etc.
- Assists Business Manager with the maintenance, confidentiality, accuracy, and timely entry of database and donor records.
Special Event Management:*Marketing/Communications:
Fiscal Responsibility: Miscellaneous: Qualification Requirements: The ideal candidate should have the following experience and qualifications:
- Assists Event Coordinator with the management and organization of all SPCA special events and projects related to fundraising.
- Assists Event Coordinator with evaluation of current events and cultivates new ideas for events with staff/volunteers to maximize resources and increase revenue for the organization.
- Works collaboratively with the Event Coordinator to cultivate and solicit corporate sponsors for our organizational events.
- Formulates and directs a continuing long-range public relations and marketing program to assure the fulfillment of the mission of the organization.
- Responsible for the growth, education and public awareness of the organization through literature, the media, special events, public displays and speaking appearances.
- Organizes presentations to civic groups, corporations and municipalities.
- Responsible for the preparation and assisting in the organizational online and printed newsletter.
- Creates educational and promotional materials and other publications, like the Annual Report, as necessary and is responsible for securing printing services in the most cost efficient manner.
- Prepares public information notices such as press releases and PSA’s regarding the SPCA’s activities and general animal information. Distributes information to the media and follows up with them to answer questions.
- Maintains and develops the shelters website and social media sites.
- Identify ways to increase public awareness within the community.
- Foster inter-agency and external community relationships; show leadership and integrity promulgating SPCA of Luzerne County as a “model” agency for animal welfare.
- Develop a sound and fiscally appropriate marketing campaign to better align the organization within the greater animal welfare community; be an enthusiastic and visible advocate; articulate a clear and compelling case for support of our organization; represent the organization in all communications with media, government, and the local community; recognize and leverage media opportunities to increase visibility in the community; manage internal and external communications and public relations.
- Create and manage department budget; forecast annual fundraising income and establish goals tied to exceeding annual income forecasts and donor growth objective.
- Fosters relationships with organizations, individuals and corporations to help obtain supplies and other donations needed to keep down operating expenses.
- Prepares financial and/or statistical reports as needed to the Board.
- Serves on special committees at the requests of the Board, projects or teams, etc.. Special projects may or may not be limited to projects related to Development, and could include special training projects, and events such as all-staff meeting.
- Assists in ensuring quality care is provided to patrons, visitors, staff and volunteers at the shelter or at shelter events.
- Assists Executive Director and staff in situations requiring immediate problem solving. Takes control for situations that could be potentially damaging to the public image of SPCA of Luzerne County.
- Willingly and cooperatively performs other duties, as assigned by proper authority, that may not be in specific job description.
- Must provide writing samples
- At least five (5) years of proven strong fundraising and development experience, with a track-record of developing and managing ongoing fundraising efforts for a nonprofit organization and a successful record of soliciting major and individual gifts.
- Proven ability to think strategically and plan for the long-term success of the organization.
- Proven ability to work with a volunteer Board of Directors, including playing a leading role in board recruitment, development and retention.
- Proven track record as an effective communicator; skilled in writing and speaking; ability to handle community and public relations communications; adept at crafting proposals, grants, donor correspondence and other kinds of materials.
- Proven ability to manage, motivate, and train staff in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; ability to manage stress and maintain professionalism in high pressure situations.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Computer literate, proficient with donor software, Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership, motivational, organizational and interpersonal skills, and a passion for animals.
