Respiratory Therapy Director directs the programs and staff of the respiratory therapy department. Oversees the provision of diagnostic, treatment, and educational services for patients with respiratory disorders. Being a Respiratory Therapy Director develops and implements respiratory care services in accordance with the policies of the hospital and the directives of the medical staff. Monitors patient progress and treatment plans. Additionally, Respiratory Therapy Director manages departmental budgets and reports, and maintains department records and statistics. Requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires Registered Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapy Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. The Director of Respiratory Therapy will be on the management team for the Ventilator Unit. This position’s responsibilities includes, but not limited to, the following primary duties:
Duties:
Effective staff work schedule acuity planning and implementation
Responsible for creating and managing vent six-week schedule including but not limited
to making sure all shifts are covered and contacting employees to cover open shift or
call outs
Trusted to cover day/night shifts that are not filled or called out, including weekends
and holidays
Personnel Management & Educational Development
Accurate payroll & PAR management
Effective Materials Management ensuring supply availability for all demands
Personnel compliance to respiratory medical records and shift documentation forms
Compliance to all Policy/Procedures within the scope of respiratory services
Interdisciplinary support, cooperation within the Organization and Facility Management
Team
Completing all reports and communications on a timely basis
Effective interviewing, hiring and Orientation of new hire personnel
Promoting effective infection control practices and equipment P/M maintenance
Staff Educational Development and Documentation
Maintain personal hands on and visible supervision routinely on ventilator unit and any
other assigned respiratory care floors/units
Assist with admitting, discharging, and transferring residents
Assure physician orders are carried out, delegating work as necessary
Exemplifying professional leadership conduct and character
Implementing timely and effective corrective staff actions
Maintaining respiratory office, supply rooms, and environment in satisfactory condition
Maintaining personnel in constant readiness for any medical or environmental emergencies
Timely and effective communications regarding departmental operations to Facility Administration and Medical Directors
Other duties assigned as needed
Requirements:
Graduate of an approved school for respiratory care
Credential as either CRT or RRT by the National Board for Respiratory Care
Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in good standing
CPR Certified (BLS)
Requires minimal to no supervision to comply with job responsibilities
Well spoken, high work level ethic and professional demeanor/character
Would like to see:
Minimum of (5) years in acute/chronic respiratory care experience
Minimum of (2) years respiratory care supervision of personnel/services Physical/Mental Demands:
Able to lift a maximum of 20 pounds to shoulder height
Must be able to demonstrate effective time and multi-task management under
moderately stressful conditions/environment
Must be able to ambulate moderate distances
Demonstrate eye/hand coordination with adequate finger dexterity in providing
invasive and noninvasive respiratory care procedures
Able to work prolonged hours that may include double shift or off duty shift response
to ensure the acuity staffing plan is in effect
Able to reorganize routine personal work habits at the requirement of Organizational
Superiors; operational needs, personal work schedules & fiscal work force developments
Physical and Emotional Demands: Good physical and emotional health, management skills, and communication skills.
Exposure Risks: Normal work routine could involve exposure to blood and body fluids. Responsible for following OSHA guideline standard and the use of universal precautions.
Working Conditions: Hours indicated by the residents, community's needs and scheduling needs. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
