Rigger facilitates the movement and positioning of heavy equipment, materials and cargo. Sets up rigging, slings, pulleys, winches, dollies and ropes to safely maneuver loads. Being a Rigger coordinates moving activities with others using hand or other signals. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, Rigger may be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Requires 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Rigger

  • Under general supervision, uses and handles rigging equipment and gear in moving, lashing, and securing of heavy objects such as machines, and/or member of structures at the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work.

    EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:
    Arranges to raise and lower in a safe manner all types of materials, machines, and/or equipment to and from working platforms, trucks, streets, floors and other levels in structures or vessels. Inspects, tests and maintains all types of rigging equipment such as planks, fiber ropes, wire ropes, chains, swing scaffolds, etc. Rigs all types of working platforms, swing scaffolds and bosun's chairs. Rigs and uses all types of hoisting equipment such as shear log, catheads, ginpoles, forklifts, and similar equipment, and for those holding a valid NYC Department of Buildings Machine Hoisting License Class C (or higher), may be asked to operate the Cherry Picker for rigging purposes. Uses jacks, rollers, and skids in the moving of heavy equipment and structural members. Splices wire rope; splices and ties knots in fiber ropes. Handles mooring lines and gangways. Uses Dynamometer for strength testing slings, straps etc. Keeps work records, inspection reports, and certificates as required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENT: For appointments in DOT, a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York is required, and must be must be maintained for the duration of employment.

    DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates must pass a drug screening to be appointed. Riggers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.

    TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. Please visit www.nyc.gov/careers/search and search for Job ID Number: 607184.     Minimum Qualifications

    1. Five years of full-time experience acquired within the last ten years as a Rigger doing the work outlined under Duties and Responsibilities.

    Residency Requirement

    New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
