Description
SAIC is hiring to assist on an ambitious effort, the Climate, Ecosystems and Fisheries Initiative (CEFI), to develop and deploy a nationwide ocean modeling, prediction, and decision support system to meet the challenge of coastal ecosystem management in a changing climate. This contract position at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory will be integral to this NOAA-wide effort. The position will entail:
* Assisting in the onboarding and support of CEFI’s team of ocean modelers on NOAA’s and GFDL’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, including:
- Improvement in onboarding materials;
- Establishing and maintaining a CEFI-community technical support forum for CEFI users to ask questions, assist the community with addressing CEFI technical issues as they arise, and elevate issues to the NOAA/GFDL helpdesk when needed.
As needed, working with GFDL’s Flexible Modeling System (FMS) and Flexible Runtime Environment (FRE) development teams to improve high-resolution regional ocean simulation workflows.
* As needed, working with the GFDL and CEFI data portal teams to enhance data transfer to CEFI’s stakeholders;
* As needed, working with the GFDL and CEFI data portal teams to publish and serve data into the public domain;
* As needed, working with CEFI’s lead software developer and code manager to implement code and workflow improvements into CEFI’s GitHub infrastructure;
* Developing and maintaining internal webpages for CEFI, including relevant documentation, model simulation database, and associated output and analyses;
* Assisting with creating and maintaining external webpages for CEFI to showcase project results across NOAA and to stakeholders.
The ideal candidate would have knowledge of fundamental aspects of computer science, applied mathematics, and coding. Knowledge of Unix/Linux, shell scripting, python and/or Fortran, HTML or WordPress, Perl and/or SQL would be recommended, as would a background or interest in earth, ocean, and/or climate science.
The successful candidate would become a valued member of a cross-disciplinary team of climate, ocean, ecosystem, and computer scientists working to address compelling climate adaptation challenges in our coastal oceans. They would regularly attend and contribute to meetings of this team, and additional leadership opportunities are anticipated with experience. They would also become part of a world-leading climate and earth system modeling center, where they can contribute to and benefit from a decades-long legacy of pioneering climate and earth system science and modeling.
