    Job Summary: To plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the Nursing Department in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations. To direct and assure that residents are cared for in a safe and efficient caring manner.

    Qualifications: The Director of Nursing must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota. Have knowledge of federal and state standards and regulations. He/she should have knowledge of quality improvement processes and ability to implement quality improvement processes and systems within the facility, apply policies, systems, practices and procedures used to coordinate the human resources within a facility relating to recruitment, retention, reward, development and termination. The DON should have skills of development and maintaining positive relationships with staff, residents, and family members. Ability to develop rapport, trust, and open communications that enhance the growth and job performance of staff. Ability to guide or facilitate individuals in a direction consistent with organizational goals/objectives.

    General Responsibilities:

    • Participates in management planning and decision-making.
    • Participates in writing of departmental policies, procedures and goals.
    • Establishing and implementing procedures for the provision of nursing care and delegated medical care, developing nursing policy and procedure manuals that must be available at each nurse’s station, and developing written job descriptions for each category of nursing personnel.
    • Provides timely and pertinent facts to Administrator.
    • Determines with the Administrator the numbers and levels of nursing personnel to be employed.
    • Demonstrates cooperation with supervisor and commitment to quality.
    • Ensures foundation elements of department (policy/procedures, staffing, job descriptions, goals, and objectives) are current and support quality care and safe practice.
    • Works with Administrator or business office to develop departmental budget, for staffing, supplies, and equipment.
    • Operates department within budget, except for approved deviations.
    • Directs all aspects of department personnel administration, from hiring and orientation to promoting, discipline and termination.
    • Evaluates staff on an annual basis within scheduled time frames.
    • Delegates and monitors non-nursing responsibilities to other staff consistent with their training, experience, competence, and legal authorization, and with nursing home policy.
    • Monitors activity of department and holds self and subordinates accountable to uphold established standards and/or criteria in policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations. 
    • Organizes and promotes educational experiences for staff, while developing, enriching and facilitating individual employee competencies and satisfaction with work.
    • Reports to work, accepts and completes assignments and duties as scheduled.
    • Communicates schedule changes to the Administrator.
    • Responsible for the total nursing care of residents and the accuracy of the nursing care records.
    • Participates in the selection of prospective residents based on nursing care needed and nursing personnel competencies available. 
    • Interact with physicians to plan care for residents; and assure that the comprehensive plan of care is established and implemented for each resident and is reviewed at least quarterly and within seven days of a revision of the assessment. 
    • Assuring that discharge and transfer planning for residents is conducted. 
    • Responsible for coordinating nursing services for the residents in the nursing home with other resident care services provided both within and outside the nursing home.
    • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day.
    • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
    • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
    • Must be able to see and hear or use aids that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
    • Must function well independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, families, staff and support agencies.
    • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility.
    • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility.
    • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move and/or carry such weight a minimum of 50 feet.
    • Must be physically able to assist in the evacuation of residents during an emergency situation.
    • Other duties as assigned.
