Soil Scientist studies, investigates, and conducts experiments on different soil/plant types to determine use capabilities of soils, and effects of alternative practices on soil productivity. Applies a wide range concepts, practices, and procedures from two or more specialized fields of science, such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, or agriculture. Being a Soil Scientist may require a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences or a related field with at least 5 years of work experience. May direct the work of a small group of employees. Additionally, Soil Scientist relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager and may be considered the lead for a specific area or unit. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direct supervision, reviews scientific data, interprets results, and prepares summaries for review by project manager(s) as assigned such as:
· Responsible for the statistical evaluation of laboratory and/or field derived information. Primary focus on soil, groundwater and leachate monitoring data and interpreting comprehensive groundwater statistics.
· Prepare and submit notifications pursuant to state and federal regulations.
· Collaborate with others on various environmental projects as delegated.
· Provide technical and professional support to clients.
· Prepare permit applications for environmental reporting submittals.
· Evaluate tables, graphs and diagrams depicting comparisons of environmental monitoring data such as soil, groundwater, surface water and leachate.
· Assist with or directly derive various hydrogeological reports.
· Complete other tasks as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor of Science degree is required, preferably in chemistry, biology, geology/hydrogeology or environmental related field.
· Proficient verbal communication and technical writing skills.
· Ability to interact with team members, clients, and regulatory agencies.
· Willingness to be proactive in obtaining knowledge relating to environmental regulations.
· Ability to prioritize work and maintain flexibility to adapt plans as necessary.
· Dependable attention to detail and time management.
PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
· Familiarity with federal and state environmental laws and regulations relating to environmental compliance such as Clean Water Act or various Illinois EPA programs.
· Environmental chemistry, and
· Basic statistical coursework a plus.
