Strategic Planning Director directs and oversees an organization's strategic and long-range goal planning function. Drives strategic initiatives and supports the development of long-term growth plans and profitability goals. Being a Strategic Planning Director analyzes emerging industry trends, expansion opportunities, including mergers and acquisitions, competitive threats, the viability of outside business partners, and sources of capital. Establishes and retains relationships with industry analysts and the investment community. Additionally, Strategic Planning Director utilizes data-driven methodologies to analyze business performance metrics and process improvement options effectively. Develops reporting and tools to communicate strategic plans and concepts to leadership. Conducts periodic status reviews of organizational goals and objectives to identify roadblocks to progress. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Strategic Planning Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     Job Description

    Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, the Director of Estate and Gift Planning is responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding deferred gifts and life income stream gifts as a key area of opportunity for Idaho State University. This individual will manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects and partner with Advancement Division and institutional leadership along with philanthropic advisors, deans, faculty and staff, to cultivate, solicit, and steward planned gifts. This position will work closely with the entire University Advancement team to ensure coordination among individual giving programs and across all units within the University. The position requires a travel commitment ranging from  20-50% depending on constituent locations and communication preferences. The position may be located in Pocatello, Meridian, or Idaho Falls as agreed upon at time of hire.

    Key Responsibilities

    1.    Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of planned giving donors and prospective donors through correspondence, letters, phone calls and personal visits.
    2.    Identify and prioritize prospective donors, and establish stewardship or cultivation strategies to achieve increased solicitation and revenue goals of deferred gifts, gifts of real estate, and life income gift structures such as charitable trusts.
    3.    Design, adapt and implement an annually updated comprehensive gift planning marketing plan with the goal of increasing revenue from deferred gifts (planned gifts) and documented bequest intentions.
    4.    Prepare donors proposals using planned giving software (Crescendo), craft briefing materials, correspondence, reports, and related documents for solicitation and stewardship of prospective donors.
    5.    Travel throughout Idaho as well as other areas of the country to pursue gift planning strategies and build enduring relationships.
    6.    Participate in professional development activities to remain current on relevant activity and trends in gift planning, financial and estate planning, federal tax law and regulations that govern charitable giving, and new services offered by other non-profit groups and organizations and to raise Idaho State University’s visibility in the profession.
    7.    Cultivate strong working relationships with colleagues in University Advancement and across the University.
    8.    Design and lead regular in-house education gift planning efforts and outreach for fundraising staff and donors.
    9.    In collaboration with the Donor Relations Coordinator, maintain and enhance stewardship for planned gift donors and promote the Legacy Society as recognition for these donors.
    10.    Perform additional duties as assigned by the Vice President of Advancement.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1.    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate discipline.
    2.    Three to five (3-5) years of successful major gift fundraising with experience securing planned gifts. Additional education/experience may be used for the minimum qualifications.
    3.    Proven track record of establishing trust-based relationships with donors.  
    4.    Understanding of fundraising principles and ethics.
    5.    Understanding of complex outright gifts, charitable life-income and estate gift structures. Competency using donor management and planned giving software programs, the Microsoft Office package, and standard office equipment. .
    6.    Strong communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills; Goal-oriented and able to work independently.
    7.    Experience creating compelling donor proposals.
    8.    Ability to drive and be insured to travel in alignment with work duties.
    9.    Be collaborative, enthusiastic, team-oriented, and interact effectively with diverse groups including faculty, students, and prospective donors.
     
    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Advanced degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university.

    2. Five to seven (5-7) years of successful experience and proficiency in securing planned gifts.

    3. Experience with complex outright gifts, real estate gifts, charitable life-income and estate gift structures, family wealth planning, and multi-generational estate planning strategies.

    4. Experience using Raiser’s Edge donor management system.

    5. Proven track record of formulating and executing effective philanthropic strategies and growing contributions through planned giving vehicles.


    Additional Information

Salary will be between $85,000 - $95,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
