JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for supporting the recruitment and retention of American Indian students.
MAJOR DUTIES
Assists in the recruitment of American Indian students.
Coordinates academic services available on campus.
Maintains student contact through Native American campus organizations.
Serves as an advocate for American Indian students as necessary to support academic success.
Development and management of grant proposals and budgets related to student programming and services.
Assists chair of the Annual Symposium on the American Indian and other campus/community events.
Supervises the work of student workers.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of local, regional and national demographics related to Native American populations.
Knowledge of the sovereign status and general government operations of tribal nations.
Knowledge of history, policies and best practices of Indian Education.
Knowledge of budget management principles.
Knowledge of relevant university policies and procedures.
Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
Skill in decision making and problem solving.
Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Center for Tribal Studies Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the employee policy manual, report guidelines, grant guidelines, and university budget management principles. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of varied program coordination duties. The variety of programs to be coordinated contributes to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is support the recruitment and retention of American Indian students. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of center operations.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other university personnel, faculty, staff, students, parents, community and business leaders, tribal officials and representatives, government agents, personnel from other colleges and universities, and members of the general public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned student workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance.
Annual salary $34,356.00 with excellent benefits, including generous leave time.
