  • South Dakota State University’s (SDSU) American Indian Student Center (AISC) is looking for our next Advisor- Student Success. Our ideal candidate is a skilled relationship builder that demonstrates people-centered customer service. AISC is committed to maintaining a campus environment that encourages and values students of various groups. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12 month, full-time, benefit-eligible position. The American Indian Student Center (AISC) facility was completed in June 2020, creating a home for American Indian and Indigenous students in the heart of the SDSU campus. The center includes a student lounge with full kitchen, art room, multipurpose room, classroom, conference room, and study spaces in addition to staff offices. South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to receive the benefit of and participate in education, research, and service and is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.  Sponsorship is not available for this position. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Advisors provide guidance and support to students as they pursue their academic goals. Advisor- Student Success plays an important role in the advising experience for SDSU students and are charged with improving the retention rate for a select group of students. Additional responsibilities include:Advise a caseload of American Indian undergraduate students on academic matters ranging from selecting a program of study and developing academic plans to academic skill development, curricular and co-curricular engagement, and financial well-being;Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty, and support services for help with academic, personal counseling, career counseling, and financial aid support;Communicate University policies including general education, major and minor, and graduation requirements;Assist students in exploring career options related to their academic programs of study;Support students as they make the transition from high school to college;Maintain ongoing contact with advisees;Maintain detailed records of interactions with advisees;Deliver presentations about academic success advising in classrooms and other settings;Coordinate advising programs or retention efforts, such as Early Orientation; andCo-advise American Indian Student Association (AISA) and American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) student organizations.BENEFITS: South Dakota State University offers a wide range of excellent benefits including medical, dental, and flexible benefits, retirement plans, compensation packages, paid holidays, and vacation leave.  Employees also have access to internal and state-sponsored training as well as reduced tuition for state-supported courses at all State of South Dakota academic institutions.  We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays.  Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, American Indian Studies or related field completed by start date; A minimum of one year of academic or student success advising, counseling, or related experience;Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days;Experience working with American Indian and indigenous students or individuals;Effective written communication skills;Effective verbal communication skills; andStrong interpersonal skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience working with American Indian and indigenous students in a higher education setting. APPLICATION PROCESS:This system will guide you through the electronic application form.
