Position Title: Pediatric Expanded Functions Dental Assistant
Job Summary:
The pediatric expanded functions dental assistant plays a crucial role in assisting pediatric dentists during dental procedures and providing high-quality care to pediatric patients. This role involves performing advanced dental assisting duties in compliance with state regulations and office protocols.
Responsibilities:
- Chairside Assistance: Assist pediatric dentists during dental procedures by providing chairside support. Prepare dental instruments, equipment, and materials needed for each procedure. Anticipate the needs of the dentist and ensure a smooth workflow.
- Expanded Functions: Perform expanded functions under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, as allowed by state regulations. This may include:
- Placement and removal of rubber dams.
- Application of pit and fissure sealants.
- Placement and removal of temporary crowns and fillings.
- Taking impressions for space maintainers or other appliances.
- Applying fluoride treatments.
- Applying dental bonding materials.
- Performing coronal polishing.
- Patient Care: Provide compassionate care to pediatric patients throughout their dental visit. Help patients feel comfortable and at ease during procedures. Communicate with patients and their parents/guardians to address any concerns or questions.
- Sterilization and Infection Control: Adhere to strict sterilization and infection control protocols to maintain a safe and hygienic environment. Properly sterilize and disinfect dental instruments and equipment between patients.
- Radiography: Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) as directed by the dentist. Ensure proper positioning of patients and use appropriate radiation protection measures.
- Record Keeping: Accurately document patient information, treatment provided, and any relevant clinical notes in patient records. Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Assist with Administrative Tasks: Assist with front office duties as needed, such as scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage, and processing payments.
- Patient Education: Educate patients and their parents/guardians about oral hygiene practices, preventive care, and post-operative instructions. Provide demonstrations and explanations in a clear and understandable manner.
- Emergency Response: Assist in managing dental emergencies that may arise during patient visits. Follow established protocols for responding to emergencies and providing appropriate care.
Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited dental assisting program.
- Certification or licensure as a dental assistant in the state of Florida.
- Additional certification or training in expanded functions as required by state regulations.
- Previous experience in pediatric dentistry preferred.
- Knowledge of pediatric dental procedures, techniques, and materials.
- Proficiency in dental terminology and charting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- CPR/BLS certification is required.

Education:
- High school or equivalent (Preferred)
Experience:
- Dental assisting: 1 year (Preferred)
- pediatric dental: 1 year (Preferred)
