Position Overview
This is a skilled technical and specialized position to assist the Staff Professional Land Surveyor. The crew chief must have experience with the basic principles of boundary surveying, topographic surveying, and construction layout.
Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
• The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for supervising the daily activities of the survey crew, if it exists, in the field and in the office.
• The Survey Crew Chief must be experienced with operating all common optical and electronic surveying equipment. He must also have extensive experience with electronic data collection devices. Experience with survey grade GPS, GPS software
• The Survey Crew Chief is also responsible for the quality and detail of survey field notes. Assists the Staff Professional Land Surveyor with researching and locating survey monuments, property corners, land markers, and other reference points.
• Office duties consist of filing field notes, keeping survey records. Basic familiarity with county land records keeping is required.
• The ability to read construction plans is required.
• The position also requires the ability to perform mathematics calculations such as basic angles, bearings, and curves for construction staking.
• The Survey Crew Chief with support of the Staff Professional Land Surveyor works with other surveyors the City has under contract for consulting and support work.
• The Survey Crew Chief with support of the Staff Professional Land Surveyor provides technical support to other City agencies such as the Legal Department and the Planning Department.
• Prepares for survey assignments and record keeping. Also assists with data transfer and data management.
• Responsible for survey equipment, and the condition of the equipment assigned to him/her. Takes detailed field notes when required, and otherwise acts as a general aid to the surveying and engineering staff.
• Performs office duties when assigned such as assisting CAD designers, engineers, and engineering techs with field information when required.
• Work closely with staff project engineers and the Director of Engineering, cad designers and assist Staff Professional Land Surveyor with all of the data the engineers and designers need to prepare working set of plans.
• Required to work with and assist the public. This would include providing citizens with any related information the Staff Professional Land Surveyor may have, or be able to direct the “citizen” to the proper regulatory agency if possible. The Survey Crew Chief also works with other engineers and surveyors. This includes assisting other surveyors and engineers with information that is in the public domain, but not readily accessible to private firms.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately.
• Also the ability to keep neat, detailed, and accurate field notes.
• Sufficient physical stamina to perform the required duties while working long hours and under occasional adverse weather conditions.
• Must have basic computer operating knowledge, experience in MS Office Suite, text messaging, and be able to learn to use data transfer software.
Required Licenses or Certificates
Must possess a valid Mississippi driver’s license.
Desirable Education and Experience:
• Graduation from high school or acceptable equivalent. Additional technical courses such as CAD drafting preferred.
• Minimum of four years of experience in surveying, two of which must be as Crew Chief. Construction and topographic surveying experience preferred.
• Must be able to qualify for acceptance to the Mississippi Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors Land Survey Intern exam within four years of employment.

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 30 pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors.
