Sustainability Data Analyst

  • We are interviewing for a full-time Sustainability Data Analyst at our Denver location. Candidate should have 2-5 years of experience with relational databases, data visualization/dashboarding (in particular using Power BI) and integrating data from a variety of sources via API and other methods. Position will be supporting the ongoing integration of air, greenhouse gas (GHG) projects and inventories, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data for reporting and assurance efforts as well as supporting the development of internal and client-facing tools using off the shelf software.

    Knowledge of Colorado emissions inventory state regulations and federal GHG rules preferred but not required, and exposure to the oil and gas sector or related industries would enhance the opportunities to be successful in the position. Candidates meeting the minimum requirements and higher are encouraged to apply; this position is designed for a subject matter expert to take a leadership role when they are ready to do so.

    Position Overview

    Spirit’s sustainability team is growing, and we are looking to grow our advanced data management services. Our Spirit team includes numerous team members with data management experience, and this position is intended to bolster that experience with someone who has the ability to successfully troubleshoot, design and implement data solutions for clients. This position will have the ability to advance rapidly to a leadership role or even start in such a role if they have sufficient experience in the consulting model and leading team members.

    With the rapid advance of GHG regulations in Colorado and at the Federal level, there is a significant increase in the demand for assurance, increased frequency of reporting, and complex reconciliation of empirical and estimated data. Spirit serves sophisticated clients looking to drive better and faster solutions to become more sustainable and are looking to Spirit to assist them on their journey. Spirit data management team members work with external software and platforms and build out bespoke solutions to integrate and display critical ESG data for decision-making purposes.

    Other anticipated tasks would include supporting and leading GHG inventory efforts, assurance of inventories prepared by others, and providing more data tools to inform operational efforts in a timely fashion. Spirit is a strong proponent of the ability of data to tell and drive positive narratives in the sustainability space and maintaining that larger perspective while being able to build out functionality will lead to additional success in the position.

    Desired areas of expertise include SQL, Microsoft Power BI/Power Query, Python, Intermediate/Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, Office 365, Teams, and web-based programming.

    Responsibilities:

    The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting/managing a variety of our ongoing sustainability projects, including but not limited to the following:

    • Buildout of data models including advising on data architecture, security, access and dashboard set-up;
    • Software integrations with emissions modeling software, asset management software, compliance management software, etc.;
    • Emissions reduction strategies;
    • GHG inventory development, annual reporting and third-party assurance of the same;
    • Corporate ESG strategy and reporting;
    • Scenario analysis and development/modeling of specific sustainability strategies over defined planning horizons; and
    • Regulatory applicability analyses, to include state, local, and federal regulations.

    Additional responsibilities may include:

    • Mentoring Spirit team members on data management;
    • Supporting a variety of additional tasks across the organization related to data management;
    • Developing internal templates, tools, and data visualization products; and
    • Helping drive innovation and thought leadership efforts across our Sustainability services program.

    Skills:

    • Analytical ability and problem solving;
    • Effective time management;

    • Social skills and professionalism necessary to establish and maintain long-term working relationships with clients and co-workers;
    • Fundamental math and science competencies (e.g., unit conversions, use of formulas, data evaluation); and
    • Proficiency with MS Office suite (e.g., Word/Excel/Outlook/SharePoint) and time/expense tracking software.

    Requirements:

    • B.S. or above in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Planning, Engineering, Data Science or related discipline;
    • At least 3-5 years of experience in consulting and/or technical software development;
    • Effective personal time management skills with multiple projects;
    • A high level of professional ethics;
    • Social skills and professionalism necessary to establish and maintain long-term working relationships with clients and co-workers; and
    • Limited travel (under 10%).

    Per Colorado Pay Transparency Requirements (CEPA):

    This role is a salaried position with a typical range of $75,000 - $95,000 annually. Spirit bases all pay determinations on experience, skills, and performance.
