APG Northern Minnesota is seeking a Managing Editor for the Mesabi Tribune.
The Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the newsroom. This role will develop story and content ideas, coordinate work of reporters and photographers, post digital content, and coordinate production schedules to ensure press times are met. The ideal candidate will work with integrity in upholding organizational values and ethics while driving readership for the paper’s print and online editions.
Essential Responsibilities:
Develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal. Monitors and selects news items by utilizing all news sources such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services and other reporters.
Coordinate work of reporters. Assign topics, events and stories to individual reporters for coverage.
Writes leading or policy editorials. Collect, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, using intuition and experience to compliment data.
Completes reporting and photography assignments as needed.
Determines placement of stories based on relative significance, available space, and knowledge of layout principles. Marks layout sheets to indicate position of each story and accompanying photos.
Writes and rewrites headlines, captions, columns, artiles, and stories to conform to publication’s style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements. Selects and crops photographs and illustrative materials to conform to space and subject matter requirements.
Directs copy editors in modifying copy to conform to space requirements. Verifies facts, dates, and statistics using standard reference sources.
Reviews and approves proofs submitted by production.
Authority and Relationships:
Works closely with people within the communities served, business and community leaders, requiring a high level of integrity and tact as a representative of Adams Publishing Group and the Mesabi Tribune. Closely works with a wide variety of internal associates to meet quality and production goals.
