Teacher High School prepares lesson plans and instructs students in an assigned secondary school. Develops and implements grade appropriate course work, activities, and assessments to meet the academic needs of children in a grade 6-12 classroom setting. Being a Teacher High School evaluates and monitors student's performance. Assesses and documents students' progress. Additionally, Teacher High School participates in development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for specific students. Resolves classroom issues and conflicts. May participate in implementing special programs for students. May supervise teaching assistants. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require state-specific teaching license. Typically requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Typically reports to a principal. The Teacher High School occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Qualifications:

    • B.A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field teaching.
    • State of Michigan certification in teaching in appropriate subject area.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
    • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.
    • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
    • Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district and state.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Ability to understand procedures and function in a school system with regard to special education’s role in the overall education of a student.
    • Prior experience in urban education and Title I funded schools.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with parents, students, district staff, and community members who are culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff verbally and in writing.
    • Commitment to collaboration and teaming and effectiveness in working within a professional learning community.
    • Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and self reflection on professional practice.
    • Bilingual skills.
    • Successful experience teaching in a diverse student environment.
    • Successful experience in a team teaching environment.

    Essential Functions for the Teacher

    Job Description for the Special Education Teacher

    • Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans
    • Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students
    • Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student
    • Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities
    • Teach and mentor students in class, in small groups, and one-on-one
    • Implement IEPs and individual Behavior Plans, assess students’ performance, and track their progress
    • Update caseload IEPs throughout the school year to reflect student progress and goals
    • Complete progress reports based on student data
    • Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators
    • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
    • Develops lesson plans and tests that are in accordance with established procedures.
    • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
    • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
    • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
    • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
    • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
    • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
    • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.
    • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
    • Participate in department, school, district and parent meetings.
    • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
    • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
    • Prepare classroom for class activities.
    • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
    • Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.
    • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments
    • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
    • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
    • Participate in appropriate professional activities.
    • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations as directed. Other duties as assigned.
