    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Vocational Teacher Assistant is responsible for the development and implementation of vocational curricula for unaccompanied children and youth ages 10-17 residing in a 24-hour shelter funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Vocational courses must be age appropriate provide an introduction of courses available in a trade school environment including but not limited to culinary arts, floral arrangement, infant care, plumbing and electricity, merchandiser, hotel/motel services, carpentry, and web design. The Vocational Teacher Assistant must be culturally responsive to the needs of the children. Activities must be provided in a nurturing, learning environment that will encourage children to participate while having fun. The Vocational Teacher Assistant must ensure that case management services comply with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) licensing rules and ORR policies. The Vocational Teacher Assistant must strictly enforce and adhere to the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s (ORR) Zero Tolerance Policy to prevent the abuse and neglect of unaccompanied minors and adhere to all relevant ORR policies and procedures always ensuring the personal safety of the children and youth being served.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop curricula for approved vocational courses to include activities to be completed, and materials for successful execution of the course for youth.
    • Researches neighboring businesses and other opportunities to coordinate in-house speaker presentations for youth or field trips to locations that are community friendly.
    • Coordinates with Shift Leaders, Lead Teacher, and Youth Care Professionals for successful execution of vocational courses.
    • Trains identified staff to become subject matter experts to assist in teaching vocational courses.
    • Adheres to relevant MDHHS and ORR contract requirements for any community members entering the facility and ensure that all background checks are completed prior to allowing any entry to the shelter grounds. Additionally, volunteers or community members must not be allowed to supervise youth alone.
    • Coordinates the supervision and transportation of youth for events and field trips with YCP supervisory staff maintain constant communication with program’s supervisory team.
    • Assists with transportation and supervision of youth as needed.
    • Creates memorable moments that will have a positive impact for the youth in care.
    • Displays leadership, provide guidance and direction while being a positive role model to youth and staff.
    • Ensures that any course facilitators have the needed information and/or materials for events or activities.
    • Discusses difficulties or behavioral problems with youth and designated departmental staff (shift leader, case manager, clinician, Assistant Program Director, ORR, or licensing representative as required.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, other staff, and program staff to ensure the proper supervision and safety of the youth.
    • Must complete comprehensive Incident Reports (IRs). IRs must capture a youth’s behavior prior to an incident, what lead up to the incident, all circumstances of the incident observed/heard, interventions made during and after the incident, contacts made and resolutions.
    • Adheres to staff to child ratios indoors and off site may assist with monitoring halls, community areas, playgrounds, and lunchrooms with other teaching and program staff as needed, ensuring ratios are adhered to.
    • Participates in required training, conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars that will enhance skills.
    • Attends Treatment Team Meetings, departmental meetings and program meetings as needed.
    • Completes daily progress reports on youth behavior and any incidents within required timeframes.
    • Required to arrive at the shelter on time, review/receive any updates or changes in procedures or supervision of youth, and always arrive prepared to work on a regular and consistent basis.
    • Reports headcounts and the movement of the children on an ongoing basis and communicate on a regular basis with YCP Department Supervisor as needed.
    • Ensures that there are no safety hazards for youth whether indoors or outdoors and must react proactively to prevent immediate harm to youth or other staff.
    • Coordinates with other departments to ensure youth are provided with critical services such as case management, legal services, clinical, and appropriate medical care.
    • Actively participates in and facilitates program wide events and serve as a vital member of the program team to ensure events are successful for youth and staff.
    • Creates memorable moments that will have a positive impact for the youth in care by coordinating Holiday celebrations, recognizing birthdays, and academic achievements of youth together with Lead Educational / Activities Manager.
    • Must ensure adherence to state and ORR and MDHHS requirements for the daily overall care and release of youth in care.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by Program Director/Program Manager or designee.

    STANDARD REQUIREMENTS:

    • Be a brand ambassador and always reflect company values.
    • Must be 21 years of age or older to work directly with youth.
    • Must maintain any licensures/certifications during employment and/or obtain within required timeframes, if approved.
    • Ensure completion of On-the-Job Training requirements.
    • Meets dress code/uniform standards; appearance is neat and clean.
    • Complete any training requirements including Managing Aggressive Behavior/NRCYS and CPR/First Aid.
    • Maintains dependable attendance and ability to work a flexible schedule.
    • Assist in the safe evacuation of youth if needed.
    • May need to respond to emergency situations to ensure the safety and security of the youth.
    • Wear an ID badge while on company property or job sites.
    • Recognize the signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and provocative behavior. Follow reporting requirements for relevant state and federal contract requirements and document adhering to timeframes.
    • Must maintain confidentiality in all program areas including any information regarding youth.
    • Maintain confidentiality of health care records and information in keeping with HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI) requirements.
    • Maintain professional conduct and ensure appropriate respectful interactions during any contact with youth, staff, state licensing representatives, ORR/Federal Field Staff, and other vendors or community members.
    • Follow all company policies and procedures.
    • Adhere to all state and federal laws and regulations.
    • Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
    • Clear MVR Check.
    • Clear criminal background check. Including a national criminal fingerprint background check.
    • Clear drug testing results.
    • Clear Tuberculosis results.
    • Proof of COVID Vaccinations and other immunizations (i.e., varicella, measles, mumps, tetanus, Tdap, rubella, Flu, Hepatitis A and B).

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • GED/High School Diploma with 2 years of experience working with youth and at least 1 of those years in a shelter setting preferred in lieu of education. May include Internship or Volunteer positions held.
    • Experience in a classroom setting preferred.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • The ability to type and use a tablet/iPad, laptop, or desktop is needed to complete daily tasks.
    • Able to work cooperatively with multiple members of a Team including program staff, state licensing personnel, ORR/Federal Field Staff, and other office personnel.
    • Well organized and highly motivated.

    Pay Rate: $18.26 per/hr
