Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor oversees skilled workers responsible for constructing, maintaining, modifying, and calibrating machine shop tools, dies, prototypes, jigs, fixtures and molds. Supervises the set up and operation of various lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines used to produce tools. Being a Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor completes high level tool development work. Ensures jobs are completed correctly and on time. Additionally, Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor may require an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. - Build and/or Service/Repair dies, tools, and molds, keeping cost in line with requirements.
- Solve any die and mold problems in regard to type, layout, development, and mathematics, so as to achieve expected performance in production
- Repair, maintain and modify any dies, molds, fixtures, machines, tools, and tooling for production departments
- Have active involvement and input in planning and designing molds, dies, and fixtures
- Supervise and be a project leader in the course of building new dies, molds, prototypes, and fixtures
- Improvise when necessary tools or equipment are not available
- Perform assignments involving the field of model maker, gage maker, mold maker, jig grinder, jig borer operator, and machine builder
- Keep abreast of all the latest developments and advances made within the trade
- Purchase and maintain all the personal tools necessary to perform the above-described duties
- 3 to 5years experience as Tool and Die Maker 'B', or equivalent experience
- High School Diploma or equivalency
- Tool and Die Apprenticeship or equivalent work experience
- Able to lift up to 40 lbs/18 kgs
- Good mechanical ability
- General instructions on routine work; detailed instructions on new assignments.
- No instruction on routine work; general instructions on new assignments.
- Instructions received as to results to be obtained and procedural guidelines provided.
- Guidance received only as to broad objectives.
- Knowledge of metrics, shop trigonometry, and geometry
- Able to select most tooling materials
- Capable of operating all Tool Room machinery
- Able to interact with other departments at a design level
- 3 to 5years experience as Tool and Die Maker 'B', or equivalent experience
