  • The Diversity in Health Training Institute (DHTI) is seeking an Executive Director with enthusiasm for the DHTI’s mission, strong leadership skills, and first-hand experience related to the goals inherent in our mission and initiatives. In addition, experience in managing government and vendor contracts, guiding newcomer volunteers, working with a Board of Directors, financial management and human relations are essential.

    About the Organization:

    DHTI’s mission is to expand and diversify the healthcare workforce by connecting immigrants to healthcare career pathways in the U.S. DHTI promotes the health, well-being, and integration of immigrants by supporting their success in healthcare fields. Since 2011, through its workforce and community wellness initiatives, DHTI has worked with over 1500 immigrants, hailing from over 70 countries, and representing over 50 languages. DHTI works with immigrants, refugees, and asylum populations, largely from the following regions: Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Most of DHTI’s participants and clients have been in the U.S. for four years or fewer and identify as English Language Learners.

    Position Summary:

    This is an exciting time to join DHTI as the organization continues to evolve in workforce and community wellness initiatives. Supported by a Board of Directors that brings high levels of experience in healthcare, finance, and social service, the Executive Director (ED) will be a visionary and strategic leader who creates a roadmap for the organization's future, sets long-term goals, and effectively leads the delivery of those goals for DHTI. ED works with the staff, volunteers, government entities, school partners, healthcare employers and various stakeholders to inspire and motivate them towards achieving the mission and vision of the organization.

    The Executive Director will manage a budget over $1Million and a staff of 13 plus consultants. With the support of a management team, the Executive Director oversees two main initiatives, Healthcare Career Pathways and Community Wellness. These are primarily funded by foundations, corporations, and local and state government.

    Core Responsibilities:

    • Strategy and resource development,
    • communications and advocacy,
    • financial management,
    • staff management and organizational culture,
    • board relations and support,
    • programs direction and
    • operations oversight and building management.

    Strategy: Lead vision and strategic development, monitor implementation, and build strategic partnerships to enhance organizational resources and impact. Maintain relationships with local organizations, communities, partners, and public policymakers to identify potential strategic partnerships to increase resources and impact. Keep up-to-date with trends that shape the operating environment, such as developments in philanthropy, public policy, demographics, and technology, and promising practices in social services, healthcare, and nonprofit management.

    Resource Development: Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy in collaboration with the Board and management team. Stay informed on trends in philanthropy, public policy, and technology.

    Communications and Advocacy: Serve as the primary spokesperson, promote the organization’s mission and engage in advocacy to influence public policy and education. Lead external relations including media and community relations.

    Financial Management: Oversee financial operations, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external requirements. Manage budgeting processes, financial reporting, creation of annual budget, and asset management.

    Organizational Culture and Staff Management: Supervise staff, Foster a culture aligned with the organization’s core values and diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) goals, and oversee staff development and performance management. Ensure compliance with personnel policies and applicable HR laws.

    Board Relations and Support: Support and engage the Board of Directors in governance activities, member recruitment, and DEI initiatives.

    Programs: Ensure programs are effective, meet community needs, align with organizational priorities, and comply with contractual requirements.

    Building Management and Operations Oversight: Oversee the maintenance and operation of the building, manage technology systems and facilities, and handle leasing and tenant relationships.

    Reporting: The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Board of Director, and the position is full-time/exempt. This position is required to work in-person in our Oakland office at least three days a week, with the flexibility to work from home two days a week.

    Minimum requirements include:

    • Professional Experience: At least three years in a leadership role within nonprofit sectors, demonstrating skills in fiscal management, grant, contract, public relations, human resources t, or community leadership.
    • Financial Expertise: Proven financial management experience, ideally within nonprofit or public sectors.
    • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Experience with gender and racial justice issues, working with immigrants, and managing diverse populations, with a commitment to addressing disparities in healthcare through an analytical intersectional approach.
    • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead organizational management – leading and developing staff, cultivate board member relationships, and effectively work with volunteers.
    • Communication and Organizational Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, coupled with effective time management skills.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in fields of business, leadership, education, public administration, human services, or related fields.
    • Demonstrated leadership/track record in fundraising and capacity building.
    • Familiarity with US healthcare system and government contracts
    • Cultural competence working in diverse immigrant and refugee communities
    • Strong understanding of and connections within healthcare services within Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties.
    • Experience in social work and case management, job training and placement, higher education, healthcare workforce development

    Compensation: Salary ranging $100K to $110K, depending on experience. Full-time exempt position.
