    Job Summary

    The Research Compliance Specialist supports and implements Division of Research Safety compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements of faculty, staff, and the University. This position will report to the Controlled Substance Surveillance Manager and provide support for implementation of regulatory oversight programs at the Division of Research Safety. This position will conduct in person visits across campus, identify gaps in compliance, communicate regulatory requirements, and participate in necessary investigations of reportable incidents.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Research Compliance

    • Implement the Controlled Substance Surveillance Program for research related activities.
    • Coordinate reverse distribution and destruction activities for controlled substances.
    • Conduct site gap assessments and develop action plans to ensure regulatory compliance of research activities.
    • Conduct in-person visits in the form of surveys, audits, consultations to support research compliance.
    • Work under the direction of a program manager to implement comprehensive regulatory oversight programs.
    • Assist with development and growth of a security culture among all researchers to help ensure compliance for security sensitive materials.
    • Review inventory records and identify gaps in recordkeeping requirements.
    • Collaborate cross-functionally to gain alignment on compliance and safety issues.
    • Provide ongoing support during corrective actions phase.
    • Work with researchers to identify sustainable ways to maintain compliance and safe practices.
    • Development and delivery of training and guidelines.
    • Understand and apply federal, state, and local regulations, campus policies, and DRS programs.

    Documentation and Communication

    • Document audit or inspection findings, consultations, and other safety and compliance related activities.
    • Record data associated with research compliance programs and assist program manager in interpreting data and report writing.
    • Communicate regulatory requirements to researchers in written and oral form.
    • Communicate processes to improve compliance with regulations and campus policy.
    • Use the DRS database to record data and generate reports.
    • Assist the program manager in communicating with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies when necessary.

    Other

    • Provide regulatory reporting assistance to researchers and Division of Research Safety programs as reportable incidents occur.
    • Support DEA inspections, correspondence, and help ensure site readiness.
    • Maintain access to emerging regulations that may impact controlled substance use in research and other relevant areas of research compliance.
    • Participate as a member of the DRS team providing support through open communication and professionalism. Support strategies that foster teamwork and interdependence. Assist DRS staff as needed in related and/or overlapping duties.
    • Perform duties as needed to further enhance the mission and goals of DRS.

    Specialty Factors

    • Bachelor’s degree in science, pharmacy, engineering, or a closely related field.
    • One year of work experience working in a research environment.
    • Demonstrated experience in research compliance, laboratory management, and/or work with controlled substances.
    • Experience working with highly regulated materials.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in research that involves animals or controlled substances.
    • Experience writing, reviewing, or approving IACUC protocols.
    • Experience providing compliance oversight of federal and state regulations relevant, but not limited to the area of DEA controlled substances.
    • Knowledge of safety protocols, including handling, storage, and disposal of controlled substances.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Familiarity with standard laboratory operating and safety procedures and an understanding of the research culture in a university setting.
    • Ability to synthesize detailed information and provide critical insights across functional areas.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in both written and oral form.
    • Detail oriented.
    • Ability to apply requirements and regulations to a variety of settings.
    • Knowledge of the sensitive nature of research, equipment, and data.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and the capability to respond to emergencies promptly.
    • Exemplary communication, personal relations, team, and presentation skills.
    • The ability to perform with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under stringent deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in order to be able to analyze and investigate a variety of questions or problems.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range starts at $50,000.
