    JOB TITLE: Environmental Toxicologist

    LOCATION: Odanah, WI

    The Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (“GLIFWC” or “Commission”) is in Odanah, Wisconsin on the Bad River Reservation, along the south shore of Lake Superior (~1.5 hour east of Duluth), with a satellite office on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wisconsin.

    CLASSIFICATION: Permanent, Full-Time|

    SALARY RANGE: $53,269 - $66,590, depending on qualifications.

    Position has been classified as 50% tax exempt for qualified tribal members under Internal Revenue Code § 7873 – Tax Exemption for Income Derived from Treaty Fishing Rights-Related Activities. See GLIFWC website for current benefit information.

    JOB SUMMARY: The Environmental Toxicologist will join a team of interdisciplinary scientists in the Environmental Section of GLIFWC’s Biological Services Division (BSD). BSD staff work in diverse fields, such as fisheries, wildlife ecology, forest ecology, and environmental protection. The Environmental Toxicologist will provide technical advice to 11 Ojibwe member tribes in the implementation of their off-reservation, treaty-reserved rights in the Ceded Territories of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, focused on environmental contaminant issues and will perform duties listed below in a manner consistent with Commission policies and procedures.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Implement long-running chemical contaminant program, including coordinating collection and contaminant testing of fish, wildlife, and wild plants as appropriate; developing and updating contaminant-based fish consumption advisories and organize outreach to tribes; tracking and updating program budgets; seeking and securing funding; supervising seasonal staff; preparing administrative and project report; and update program parameters as necessary or appropriate.

    2. Research, evaluate and develop comments on select environmental issues, projects, and policy regarding environmental contaminants, engaging with all forms of scientific knowledge, including Indigenous Knowledge.

    3. Participate meaningfully in inter-agency programs and committees related to the Great Lakes basin, with a special focus on contaminant issues in the Lake Superior Basin, and in select contaminant projects to ensure that the interests of GLIFWC member tribes are represented in management decisions.

    4. Maintain and manage a large-scale contaminant database and share data with other agencies, as appropriate.

    5. Develop, update, and implement QAPPs, SOPs, and work plans for contaminant testing of fish, wildlife, and wild plants.

    6. Participate on GLIFWC’s Aquatic Plant Management team to provide risk assessments of permit applications for Ceded Territory aquatic herbicide applications.

    7. Contribute to public information publications or events, as appropriate.

    8. Respect and seek to infuse Ojibwe culture into all aspects of work performed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Master’s degree (at a minimum) in environmental toxicology or closely related field required.

    2. Experience working with tribal communities preferred.

    3. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communications.

    4. Experience with developing quality assurance plans; laboratory procedures, including quality assurance requirements; human health risk assessment; field sampling methods and sample design.

    5. Experience with computer spreadsheet and word processing software.

    6. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in close cooperation with others.

    7. Experience with statistics, data analysis and data/statistical analysis software like SAS or R preferred.

    8. Possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under GLIFWC’s vehicle policies.

    Indian preference will be applied consistent with GLIFWC policies and the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act (PL 93-638).
