Conducts research on toxic effects of consumer products and ingredients on laboratory animals for manufacturers of consumer products. Being a Toxicologist may require a Ph. D in toxicology or its equivalent and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Additionally, Toxicologist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of Epidemiology, Division of Environmental Health is seeking a qualified Public Health Toxicologist to join our division. This is a high-level position that requires the provision of expert consultation on highly technical environmental public health issues affecting the lives of Pennsylvania’s citizens. Our mission is to promote and enhance the environmental health and well-being of all people in Pennsylvania.     In this position, you evaluate toxicological information related to environmental chemical exposures using advanced scientific knowledge in environmental toxicology. This is to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of information to the public and other stakeholders to prevent and minimize adverse health effects. You provide guidance and support to the division staff in the collection and analysis of data on environmental exposure and health outcome, as well as the dissemination of information pertaining to the health effects of toxicological and environmental hazards. In addition, you develop policies and procedures for coordinating resources during toxic environmental emergencies. You also assist with the conduct of follow-up epidemiological studies and investigations to prevent adverse health effects to the public.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:
    • Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week
    • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
    • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
    • Three years of post-doctoral experience in the field of toxicology or pharmacology, which includes two years of consultative experience in toxicology; and a doctoral degree in toxicology or a closely related field.
     
    Special Requirement: 
    • This position requires board certification in general toxicology by the American Board of Toxicology or an equivalent international certifying body within eighteen months of hire.

    Other Requirements:
    • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
