SoCal Veterinary Hospital opened in August 2021 in San Marcos, California. We are a general practice that also provides reproductive services. SoCal Veterinary Hospital offers wellness services, illness exams, surgery, orthopedic surgery, dentals, etc. We are currently hiring for an experienced assistant as our team is growing! We offer a pleasant work environment with a great team. Our current business hours are Monday though Friday 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.
Veterinary Assistant
Specific Duties
1. Provides compassionate care to patients.
2. Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
3. Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas.
4. Assists with physical examinations and records observations on patients.
5. Assist the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
6. Gives injections (Sub-Q, IM, and IV) and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy. Places IV Catheters for fluid administration.
7. Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways and external cardiac massage.
8. Performs dental cleanings and polishing. Assist with restraining pets when necessary.
9. Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintain file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
10. Takes digital radiographs and dental radiographs.
11. Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspect of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
12. Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
13. Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
14. Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
15. Assist other staff members as required.
16. Understands and can carry out oral and written directions.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Licensure Requirements
· High school diploma or equivalent
2 years experience in a Veterinary Hospital performing the above listed duties
Personal Requirements
· Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can deal with them even when they are stressed or ill or in pain.
· Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
· Can work efficiently with doctors.
· Is experience with the teamwork approach and works well with all hospital staff members
· Has excellent client communication skills.
· Must be available to work 1-2 Saturdays a month.
Physical Requirements
Work requires lifting and carrying animals up to 40lbs (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40lbs). Walks or stands for extended periods of time; frequently works in a bent position.
Working Conditions
May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
