    What makes this role unique?

In this position, you will serve as a senior chemist for the Waste Management Section of the Nuclear Waste Program at the Richland Field Office, just south of the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site. You will provide technical evaluation and input on chemistry data and required characterization to support cleanup efforts and proper management of mixed wastes at the Hanford Site.

    What you will do:

    • Provide chemistry expertise to project managers, staff, and specialists.
    • Track, examine, and prepare reports on radioactive and hazardous chemical waste inventories and waste analysis and sampling plans needed to make cleanup and permitting determinations.
    • Review and develop waste analysis and sampling plans and methods to ensure the treatment of mixed waste at Hanford satisfies Land Disposal Restrictions requirements.
    • Understand and use detailed knowledge of RCRA SW-846 requirements as well as the investigative techniques needed to conduct evaluation of radioactive waste.
    • Collaborate with a team to negotiate permit conditions, conduct conflict resolution, and make selections regarding the technical and scientific merit of proposals related to permitting and cleanup of the Hanford Site.

Note: Personal protective equipment will be provided by the program along with reimbursement for required footwear.

    Required Qualifications:

Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

    • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
    • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
