    Program Field Specialist

    Position Summary

    The Student Conservation Association provides an array of corps and crew programming across the country. Program Field Specialists help with the administrative and logistical tasks of executing programs in their corresponding cities/areas. The Program Field Specialist position is responsible for ensuring the logistical and administrative tasks associated with the safe, complete, and accurate execution of SCA's various Residential programs in their portfolio are completed in a timely manner. This person helps ensure Corps Members and Project Leaders are equipped for the program delivery work scheduled and comply with curriculum and AmeriCorps mandates, safety controls, logistical service/program delivery needs, and mandatory internal record-keeping and administrative requirements. This position reports to the Program Manager. The annual salary range for this position is $51,000 - $55,000.

    The Adirondack (ADK) Corps, based in Long Lake, NY, is a 5-month AmeriCorps program that trains young adults in the trail construction & maintenance/Conservation trades through hands-on service in the Adirondack Park. The program has a strong partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and operates as an AmeriCorps program allowing crew members to dedicate 5 months of service while gaining experience in the field. The Program Field Specialist is a full-time staff position within the program.

    The Program Field Specialist will serve in 5 broad areas:

    • Project planning
    • Training and skills development for: Trail Construction & Maintenance/Backcountry camping.
    • Tool & Equipment Cache management.
    • Member social and professional development.
    • Supervision and support of Project Leaders

    The Program Field Specialist will spend the majority of their time at ADK Corps HQ or at project sites with crews.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    Program Planning & Delivery:

    Project Planning

    • Serve as the program's primary liaison for member project logistics, tools and materials procurement, and project details;
    • Actively assess project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Adapt and manage rotating projects and respond to last-minute changes.

    In the Field

    • Facilitate operations including food planning, tools, equipment, and vehicles.
    • Serve as a technical adviser and project support as determined in collaboration with the Program Manager.
    • Serve as primary Project Leader and member supervisor.
    • Monitor member's activities to ensure compliance with administrative and curriculum checklists.
    • Manage the quality & technique of the work performed.
    • Select, train, and supervise a 4-member Winter Corps crew.

    Member Training & Development

    • Serve as a trainer for technical and general skills as determined in collaboration with the Program Manager.
    • Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential.
    • Assist with curriculum development and documentation.

    Tool & Equipment Cache

    • Assist in maintaining the program's tool & equipment caches in coordination with the program partners
    • Assure proper maintenance and timely repair, and procuring tools and equipment.

    Responsible for modeling, facilitating, and building an inclusive community:

    • Lead programs in alignment with SCA Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) policies and SCA Core Values.
    • Participation in JEDI trainings and professional development opportunities.
    • Help recruit, hire, and train members of BIPOC identifying and diverse backgrounds.
    • Lead programs/training that facilitate Social and Emotional Development among ADK Corps members

    External Engagement:

    • Collaborate with program partners to develop and implement project plans and schedule and conduct project site visits when applicable.
    • Assist Program Manager in building relationships with community organizations and land partners on a local level and representing SCA at events.
    • Role model SCA mission and values to members and program partners.

    Program Administration:

    • Assist Program Manager with administrative duties, such as financial reporting, tracking and coding program expenses, and review and approval of member service logs.
    • Facilitate the evaluation of Project Leaders and program members during the mid-season and end of program evaluation seasons.
    • Report, track and respond to incidents in accordance with SCA policies and procedures.
    • Build and maintain relationships with Program alumni as directed.
    • Give and receive feedback on program logistics, projects, and training.
    • Actively engage in creative problem solving and program development scenarios.
    • Responsible for keeping abreast of internal policies and procedures and AmeriCorps requirements.
    • Assist Program Manager and Sr Program Manager in developing systems for ongoing program quality and improvement.

    Qualifications:

    • 3-6 years of progressively responsible experience including skills related to the position.
    • Minimum of 21 years of age.
    • Previous trail construction and maintenance experience required.
    • Ability to live on site in provided housing during critical periods of the season.
    • Prior experience supervising young adults in an outdoor setting.
    • Proven ability to organize and inventory large quantities of supplies and materials.
    • Valid driver's license and MVR that meets SCA standards.
    • Current or ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder or higher/ CPR certification & Leave No Trace Master Educator.
    • Ability to obtain chainsaw certification.
    • Community organizing skills and strong capacity to work in a team.
    • Proven organizational and program development skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including effective Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet experience.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Proven ability to multi-task and troubleshoot in a fast-paced environment.
    • Attention to detail and follow through on administrative tasks.

    Travel Requirements:

    • Excellent driving record and ability to drive in a variety of conditions.
    • The ability to travel for extended periods of time outside and over a variety of terrain.
    • Must have a personal vehicle.
