The Specialist Tool Design Engineer studies blueprints and determines tool specifications and requirements by interfacing with manufacturing staff to determine the best design for the tool. Designs a wide variety of tools consistent with standard tool configuration, including cutting and forming tools. Being a Specialist Tool Design Engineer works with engineering to identify problems with performance or tool life and recommends solutions or enhancements. Performs calculations to determine exact dimensions, materials required and cost of the tools. In addition, Specialist Tool Design Engineer may submit bids to purchase tools as a cost saving alternative. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Specialist Tool Design Engineer is a specialist on complex technical and business matters. Work is highly independent. May assume a team lead role for the work group.
