The Payroll Analyst must possess strong analytical and problem solving skills. This role analyzes payroll results and is responsible for ensuring payroll tax reporting is accurate and payroll related general ledger accounts are reconciled. To be successful in this role, a general knowledge of accounting principles and thorough comprehension of payroll, payroll taxes, payroll tax reporting, and a deep understanding of reconciliation/audit best practices is required.

Job Description:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar field of study preferred
  • CPP certification desired
  • Will consider candidates having a high school diploma or equivalent if coupled with extensive related work experience (5+ years) having a heavy focus on payroll tax, GL reconciliations, and payroll optimization

Skills:

  • Must be extremely organized, have attention to detail, and meet critical deadlines
  • Analytical with strong problem-solving abilities and creative resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (both written and verbal) to interface effectively with individuals at various levels
  • Ability to work well under pressure while consistently meeting time sensitive deadlines
  • Self-motivated and have the ability to work on multiple projects in a fast paced environment all while exhibiting a strong work ethic
  • Strong Microsoft Office program experience, including Excel and Word

Work Experiences:

  • Experience dealing with the payroll tax function (5+ years) for a multi-state large employer including payroll tax payments, reporting, return filings, and handling of tax registrations and agency notices
  • Extensive payroll GL recon experience required with experience in researching GL variances and preparing journal entries if needed
  • Experience analyzing payroll results with a focus on preventing payroll errors and identifying, developing, and deploying process improvements
  • ADP SmartCompliance/Workday experience highly desired

Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations of the payroll tax function, including accurate and timely processing, reporting, funding, and tax administration
  • Assist with payroll processing and review complex reports, perform data analysis, and correct payroll processing errors when identified
  • Perform extensive payroll, bank, and tax audits/reconciliations
  • Audit payroll tax data and update employee data/system as needed
  • Development/maintenance of payroll KPIs
  • Assist the payroll operations team when complex or high volume issues arise requiring additional support/assistance
  • Ensure compliance with all taxing authorities and company policies
  • Oversee all facets of multi-state payroll tax payment processing, tax return preparation, and payroll tax reporting compliance
  • Oversee system maintenance to include set up/testing when tax changes occur
  • Research and respond to all payroll tax inquires
  • Review/prepare new tax registrations when moving into new tax jurisdictions
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation, balancing, processing, and funding of payroll tax and/or garnishment payments
  • Maintain all tax set up in Workday/ADP SmartCompliance systems, including coordination of new deduction withholdings, unemployment rate changes, and establishing appropriate withholding for new and/or relocating stores
  • Review monthly, quarterly, annual filings for all taxing authorities 
  • Complete monthly reconciliations of payroll-related general ledger accounts ensuring accuracy of general ledger account balances
  • Research GL balance variances and prepare journal entries as needed
  • Maintain state unemployment rates within Workday/ADP SmartCompliance
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of all payroll tax returns and filings, and act as payroll tax liaison between ADP and Academy
  • Maintain current knowledge of all payroll tax regulations including federal, state, and local regulations
  • Notify leadership of regulatory updates, and propose and implement required changes
  • Lead year end W-2 processes/reconciliations
  • Support/lead special projects as needed in support of the payroll function
  • Develop a thorough understanding of Academy policies, procedures and safety rules
  • Perform other duties when assigned
