Nurse Anesthetist

Position Summary

 

Nurse Anesthetist administers general or conduction anesthesia to surgical and obstetrical patients.  Observes the conditions of anesthetized patients and takes necessary remedial measures as directed to counteract unfavorable conditions.  Notes and relieves postoperative anesthesia effects on patients.

 

Essential Functions

 

Prepares supplies and equipment necessary to carry out procedures.

 

Positions patient on the operating table according to established procedure for the type of operation to the performed.

 

Ascertains that the blood of proper type is available for emergency use.

 

Takes patient's blood pressure, respiration and pulse.

 

Responsible for induction and maintenance of anesthesia plus help management of pain relief in the Recovery Room.

 

Assists in moving patient to the Operating Room and Recovery Room.

 

Observes patient in Recovery Room.  Recognizes abnormal patient response to anesthesia and takes corrective action and notifies physician when unfavorable symptoms develop.

 

Submits postoperative report on patient's condition when effects of anesthesia have worn off.

 

Maintains adequate stocks of anesthetics, supplies and accessories.

 

Performance of supportive life functions (intubation, management of fluids, blood and electrolyte loss and replacement).

 

Reviews the patients of the day with the Anesthesiologist and may request consultation whenever appropriate.

 

 

 

 

Makes pre‑operative rounds and decides anesthetic for the patient; however, the final decision rests with the supervising Anesthesiologist.

 

Agrees to comply with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, rules, regulations, and standards of conduct relating to the position and has a duty to report any suspected violations of the law or the standards of conduct to his or her immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Chief Executive Officer.

Qualifications

 

Graduate from an accredited RN program with current PA license in good standing.

Graduate from Nurse Anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) or its predecessor.

Pass certification examination administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor.

Member in good standing of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), which includes:

            Current RN licensure

            Continuing education credits (40 CE) biennially

            Certification that CRNA has been engaged in Anesthesia practice for the two-year period

Verification of absence of mental, physical, or other problems that could interfere with the practice of anesthesia

Current BLS and ACLS
