Job Posting for Financial Controller at Kukoon

Hey! We’re Kukoon Rugs and we’re pleased to meet you! We're going to start by talking about our exciting new Financial Controller position, but if you'd like to know more about the company then just reach out and we’ll fill you in!

Let’s get right into it - we are looking for a Financial Controller that has some grit, passion and resilience. Someone who is hungry to help other areas of the business and grow their career into a Financial Director.

We want someone who always wants to continuously improve. Someone who can connect with a wide range of people, and genuinely make a positive impact on all departments.

So what will you be doing at Kukoon:

This role will have overarching responsibility for everything Finance. As part of the Senior Leadership team, you will drive strategic thinking across multiple levels of the business, ensuring every decision has the top and bottom line in mind. You will be a key driving factor in ensuring all decisions are backed by the business’ financials. Decisions will be factored into cash flow and budgeted.

Strategic Thinking - As an integral part of the Senior Management Team, your role involves much more than numbers - it requires Leadership across the business.

  • Align the financial strategy with the directors, ensuring the business model is scalable. Balancing the decision of managing cash flow with the level of risk involved in new ventures.
  • Work closely with directors to allocate capital for maximum ROCE over the long term.
  • Contribute at a high level to all strategic conversation, including topics that don’t directly affect Finance.
  • Devise and create all Financial strategies for the company. Specifically how we budget and forecast.

Build & continuously improve each department's financial controls and capabilities.

Finance - As the business continues to grow the requirements for finance vary and the highest quality options should always be in consideration and available where possible.

  • Manage all basic bank finance including overdrafts, LC, loans, mortgages & keep an eye to the market to ensure pricing & service remains competitive
  • Proactively seek grant/support funding from all available govt. bodies including Invest NI, Intertrade Ireland, local councils & export bodies
  • Responsible for reviewing the progress of tasks delegated to the finance team. All day-to-day deliverables of Finance will fall to you.

Cash Flow - Cash is king! Revenue and spend need to be constantly reviewed to ensure the business is in a liquid state.

  • Balancing the level of risk for the business is crucial. Prepare forecasts allowing senior management to make decisions based on both cost and opportunity cost.
  • Monitor revenue vs intake plan weekly ensuring the business is in a positive cash standpoint.
  • Maintain relationships with our suppliers and couriers in order to gain favourable pricing.

Budgeting - Everyone needs a budget or it can turn into the wild wild west. You have to work with leaders to set realistic budgets that people are held accountable to.

  • Prepare and agree budgets with all department heads based on projected revenue.
  • Review budgets monthly reporting if each account is on track. Implement and drive any changes to ensure the budget is realigned to the target.
  • Monitor all spend that is outside of the budgets set - and impose a second authoriser.

Value - Value is the often forgotten essential partner to budgeting. Just because we are within budget does not mean that we are attaining value

  • Work with depts. directly using services & products to create SLA’s and product standards that allow for auditing of quality, quantity & timeliness. Create processes for auditing and ensure they take place
  • Work with depts. using services & products to ensure we undertake at minimum annual market due diligence on price, quality & service

Reporting - We dive deep and stay focused on the details. Reports need to be timely and accurate, so we build trust across the business and make the right financial decisions.

  • Prepare monthly accounts for the Directors, with an executive summary and your proposed changes.

Auditing - With so many numbers, how do we know they are right? We have to be relentless when it comes to auditing our suppliers, our couriers, pretty much all our invoices.

  • All discrepancies audited for errors, ensuring information presented is accurate and up-to-date.
  • All large invoices verified before payment.
  • Pushback and negotiate with suppliers/couriers when invoicing does not match up.

The Other Stuff - Finance touches every aspect of the business, so the list isn’t exhaustive.

  • People need paid - wages. Holidays, sick pay… everything has to be right, 100% of the time.
  • We love lean, we love continuous improvement. Getting involved in various Kaizens to add your expertise and drive better results through the entire company.

What you bring to the table:

  • Chartered Accountant, with a thirst to keep learning and growing.
  • A strategic level thought process, who thinks about the business as a whole, rather than finance as a department.
  • You dive deep and focus on quality - you love getting into the weeds to find  the knitty gritty, but you spend your time mapping the bigger picture.
  • A problem solver mentality - you love when there is a problem, because finding solutions is your MO.
  • The ability to communicate at all levels. Whether you are chairing a SLT meeting or gaining expertise from the warehouse operators, you can adjust your communication style to suit the situation.
  • You are deadline driven. You’re competitive, and meeting deadlines is how you win!
  • You think big and move fast. Choices need to be made, better to move fast, than hesitate and be stuck in limbo. We value risk taking, as you can’t be a pioneer, without taking a few leaps.
  • You challenge people with respect - not every idea is going to work. It is your job to identify the best return on investment when it comes to process improvements.

What do we offer in return?

We have a high-performance culture which is balanced evenly with work and play:

  • 4 day working week, 6 months per year! Have every Friday off between April and September without using any Annual Leave!
  • Highly competitive salary
  • Joining one of the UK’s top online Home & Decor companies, with ambitious growth targets and significant international expansion plans.
  • Experience in a fast paced digital-first company that thrives on continually improving
  • Electric Car onsite charging
  • Enhanced Maternity Pay
  • Basically giving rugs away for free with a huge employee discount!
  • Great working culture that values people who work hard, achieve results and like to have a bit of craic doing it.
  • Perfect for someone who thrives in a company championing work/life balance
