As part of the South Region planning team, your primary role will be to supervise and quality assure production survey contracts and contractors, provide key information to the Programme Manager, which will aid in the creation of harvesting and restocking programmes and improve the accuracy of the sub-compartment database and aid in the upkeep and improvement of the sub-compartment database. Youll also lead on plant health issues, carrying out tree health surveys and update other staff members on current issues and threats., Provide plot and coupe information for contract surveys to take place using GIS systems including Survey
Tools.
Monitor performance of forest survey fieldworkers (FLS staff and contractors) through desk and field audit
of survey work & provide feedback about any issues arising.
Add completed survey data/maps to work plans.
Maintain regular contact with and provide updates on your work areas to Programme Managers, Planning
Foresters and other relevant team members on a regular basis.
Carry out mensuration surveys for clearfell and thinning as required. Possibly including the marking of
sample thinning areas.
Provide data for ForesterWeb and work plan updates & update core data sets as necessary e.g. Subcompartment database (SCDB), and tree health survey results.
Carry out tree health surveys and undertake tasks in relation to tree health champions and related issues.
Ground truth and mark felling coupe boundaries.
Undertake other surveys as instructed including environment surveys, recording areas of interest found
whilst surveying, such as conservation or heritage features.
Work with the Environment team to establish methods of work to comply with statutory legislation and best
practice.
Maintain skills set through attendance at FLS training and best practice events
Experience of working outdoors in all weathers, including walking over rough terrain in isolated
locations.
Ability to plan and self-manage time and workloads.
Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams.
Experience and knowledge of relevant forest operations, forest management or land management.
Desirable:
Experience and knowledge of forest mensuration techniques and surveys.
Experience and knowledge of environmental legislation and best practice, including protection of animal
and plant species.
Experience and knowledge of current tree health issues.
Ability and willingness to adapt to change.
Experience of managing and supervising contracts and contractors.
Technical
Essential:
Competent in the use of Microsoft office software.
Desirable:
Experience in surveys - preferably mensuration, establishment, tree health and conservation.
Competent user of Geographical Information Systems., Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check.
