Chemistry Technician

Description

Seeking a chemistry lab technician to support a fast-paced materials design team in development and testing of materials for 3D printing. Candidate must possess strong laboratory skills. Must be a self-starter, team player, able to change priorities quickly, and have excellent communication skills. Duties may include synthetic chemical manipulations, mixing formulations at the bench and proto scale, using analytical instruments, and performance and reliability testing of the resulting materials.

Responsibilities:

• Understand and follow test plans, procedures, and lab processes
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment
• Execute bench-scale formulation and synthesis experiments following a detailed plan
• Coordinate and execute materials shelf life and compatibility testing. An example would be storing material in ovens for set times and measuring properties before and after.
• Learn to operate select 3D printers, incorporate new formulations and molecules into these printers, and post-process printed parts
• Operate lab analytical equipment to validate and characterize material and mechanical properties
• Organize and maintain laboratory supplies and work areas
• Follow written and verbal instructions from chemists and engineers in the group
• Communicate effectively with other team members, both verbally and in writing; this includes communicating out of the ordinary circumstances, changes in procedures, or other information which may be considered useful.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

• BS degree in chemistry or related field, or suitable combination of education, skills and experience
• 2-4 years of experience working in a laboratory setting.

Experience:

• Direct, hands-on experience working in a chemical or materials laboratory setting
• Use of analytical instruments to measure or characterize material or mechanical properties
• Experience working with chemicals that require personal protective equipment and careful lab practices
• Proficient in Excel for data collection, proficiency in PowerPoint and Word highly desired
• Experience using software tools to design 3D printed parts is a plus.
• Background in biochemistry is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced, self-directed environment, document detailed results, and communicate to chemists and engineers
• Ability to read and follow scientific laboratory methods and procedures
• Excellent time management skills for punctual measurements
• Basic knowledge of chemical handling and storage required
• Comfortable working in a chemical development environment
• Must be able to work with UV curable acrylate systems
• Attention to detail, organized, and thorough in completing tasks
• Strong teamwork skills a must
• Ability to read and understand SDS’s and follow appropriate precautions
