The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Scientific Glassblower at 3M you will be working within R&D, creating glass apparatus to aid researchers in the development of new 3M products. You will be working in a fast paced and creative environment that blends science with art. You will be helping to shape the future of 3M through the creative lens of glass blowing.
As a Scientific Glassblower, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Providing scientific glass shop services, including custom fabrication, modification, repair, and flat glass cutting
- Consulting with customers on glassware design, specifications, and tolerances while offering technical advice on material selection
- Cutting, grinding, and cleaning different types of flat glass while regularly communicating with requesters
- Maintaining inventory, ordering, and sourcing stock and custom materials
- Continuing education in current scientific glass blowing techniques
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- High School Diploma/equivalent or higher (completed and verified prior to start)
- Two (2) year technical degree in glass art, scientific glass technology, or chemistry from an accredited institution (completed and verified prior to start)
- Three (3) years demonstrated experience in two or more of the following:
- utilizing scientific glass blowing techniques using borosilicate glass and fused quartz
- working with glass shop equipment such as lathes, annealing ovens, drill presses, flat lap wheels, belt sanders, and wet saws
- cutting and handling plate glass
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
- Bachelor’s degree in glass art, scientific glass technology, or chemistry accredited institution (completed and verified prior to start)
- Experience with other glass working techniques (fusing & slumping, hot glass, casting, etc.)
- Experience with Morton Glass Cutting System or similar systems
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and/or blueprints
- Knowledge of chemistry and physics.
- Experience using SAP, photo editing software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Experience working on a cross functional team, excellent oral and written communication skills, Problem solving ability and attention to detail
Travel: May include up to 5% domestic
