What are the responsibilities and job description for the Screen Printer position at 5.11 Tactical?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Custom Shop Production Floor Supervisor and the Screen Print Lead, this position is responsible for accurately and efficiently screen-printing on 5.11 Tactical and 3rd party apparel and products. Responsible for press set-up, press tear-down and press operation. Ensures consistent production rates, high product quality and timely order completion. This person must possess a close attention to detail and practice good judgement to exceed our customer’s expectations. Responsible for exceeding department and individual goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must gain knowledge and become proficient in the use of Shopworks.
- Must follow all department Standard Operating Procedures.
- Must learn or have existing experience with Screen Print embellishment techniques and application and be/become familiar with standard Screen Print production processes (screen reclamation and prep, screen coating, screen imaging and developing, ink mixing and pantone matching, engineering sequences, press set up and operation, dryer settings and variables, QC and testing).
- Must become familiar with 5.11 products and their construction to better understand embellishment opportunities and limitations.
- Must learn and understand all FTZ compliance requirements.
- Must meet and keep up with standard capacity averages (Standard 50% capacity based on 400 units per hour/ 1,600 impressions per 8hr shift).
- Follows daily production schedule to ensure customer orders are produced for on-time delivery (by set production date).
- Follows instructions within the Shopworks workorder and attachments to verify product style, color, sizing and total product quantity; and verifies correct design, graphic size, production sequence, ink colors and graphic placement.
- Responsible for using correct screen sequence on press.
- Responsible for using and verifying correct pantone colors in the corresponding screens.
- Adjusts press for proper squeegee pressure, squeegee angle, squeegee speed, flash temp, flash time and run speed.
- Must print pre-production strike-off for every graphic placement, to be approved by Screen Print Lead prior to running production.
- Watches production closely for quality and corrects issues as necessary.
- Verifies that dryer is set to the appropriate recipe to ensure proper cure and adhesion.
- Notifies Screen Print Lead of product shortages.
- Informs Screen Print Lead of machine malfunction or needed maintenance.
- Communicates with teammates when support is needed (set-ups, teardowns, and staging)
- Assists in solutions to improve efficiencies and can troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Scans orders “Produced” in Shopworks, in real-time of order completion.
- Maintains and ensures press equipment is clean and in proper operating condition daily. Assists in Preventative Maintenance (follow equipment prompts) and Sanitization.
- Assists in training Screen-Print Assistants and new Screen-Print department hires.
- Maintains organization and cleanliness of work area and equipment.
- Carefully follows all safety requirements.
- Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Previous work experience in a screen print or embroidery company preferred.
Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and comprehend English instructions. Listens and gets clarification. Listens to others without interrupting.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers to fill out production records.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving few concrete variables in standardized situations. Exceptional organizational skills required. Ability to recognize and resolve problems quickly using sound judgment and diplomacy.
Computer Skills: Basic computer / keyboard knowledge is required. Must have or acquire functional knowledge of company ERP (Dynamics AX) and the Custom Shop production management solution Shopworks.
